Irene -- Please use this thread for NH/VT/ME road closures

Great photos! Just amazing. Can't post the photo, but there is a good photo of the damage on the Kanc that was posted an hour ago on the White Mountains New Hampshire Facebook page. You should be able to find it on their wall. https://www.facebook.com/whitemountainsnh?sk=wall

Rte 3 Road Work - Bethlehem

Heads Up! Driving to Twin Mountain this morning I saw work crews putting up signs in preperation for road work on Rte 3 between exit 35 on Rte 93 and the Gale River bridge. Looks like the road will go down to a single lane with automated traffic lights at each end - at least by the bridge when...

Irene -- Please use this thread for NH/VT/ME road closures

I was in the head quarters down at exit 27 earlier today picking up new parking passes. They are getting a lot of phone calls and appear to be doing their best to answer them, even offering to call people back after they tracked down an answer. Certainly could be better, but at least down at...

But unfortuantly the FS site and links still say that the Kanc is closed - guessing that it doesn't get updated as fast.

White Mountain National Forest Open as of Tuesday 8/30/2011

About 1 mile from the start of the North Twin trail. at the first crossing do not cross the river - continue straight on the herd path (almost the defacto trail for many) and keep looking over your left shoulder. If you go out to wikiloc.com you can search on it and find a gps track and map.

Where do you see that? I still see Rte 112 (Kanc) closed from Lincoln to Conway on NHDOT and Bear Notch Road closed on the Ready NH site?

Or Hale via the Fire Wardens trail, then down Lend-a-Hand to the Twinway and out over the Twins back to your car! It is actually a very nice hike!

Mike - How did your friend get to the trail? Did he hike or bike to Lincoln Woods, or drive. Latest road closures still say the Kanc is closed from Loon to Bear Notch road.

Irene -- Please use this thread for NH/VT/ME road closures

The Forest Service has created an initial list of known roads and locations that must remain closed due to compromised access and safety. You can access the list by going to: http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/forests/white_mountain/conditions/ One item of interest to us anyways is that the AMC website...

White Mountain National Forest Open as of Tuesday 8/30/2011

Be aware that currently the Kanc is closed due to washouts in Lincoln and several in Albany so you may not be able to get to Lincoln Woods to try to hike it. If you do please be very very careful - even after 2 or 3 days the rivers are bound to be very high.

Another Yellowstone grizzly attack, different outcome

Yes they can, and in fact black bears teach the cubs to climb a tree when they feel threatened while the adult flees. We were luckiy enough to this exact behavior once. After spotting a mom and cub and taking a few photos, they saw us. Mom ran away while the cub climbed a tree. When it saw we...

Facts to back up that claim ??? Some people claim to have been attacked but the odds are it was a bluff charge.
