Trip Slideshow from Northern Sweden, Lappland. Kungsleden trail

This seems to be a custom but every time we were arriving at the huts the caretaker saw us from the distance and came out of the hut to greet us and give us their traditional hot lingonberry drink. That was very nice and welcoming.

Trip Slideshow from Northern Sweden, Lappland. Kungsleden trail

Most of the huts provide mini supply of canned food to buy, powder milk, some chocolates, some cans of soda or beer. On our tour, only 1 hut did not offer to purchase food but I know of other huts around there that do not provide that opportunity. We carried freeze dried food for 1 person...

    Global Warming and You

My career is unaffected by weather patterns. I have year round hobbies. When there is snow I ski, hike. When there is ice I skate, hike . When there is warmth I sea kayak and bike and hike. ... something like that ...

    Map and compass tutorial

watched the video yesterday and enjoyed it. Thanks. It's nice to see White Mountain location as part of the video (Franconia Ridge). :-) I've been part of a few orienteering events throughout my life, mostly in my early years to know how to use a map and compass but I feel subconscious when...

Can Stony Brook down from Moriah be skied ?

Howdy. I've always done Moriah from Carter Moriah trail and I don't recall doing Stony Brook on the down hill. The book says it's a gradual slope...would it be doable on bc skis or a sliding snowshoe ? I'm considering doing Moriah via Carter Moria on the way up and then Stony Brook Down.

Winter Katahdin via Abol Trail Questions

Yes, my buddy actually used a fat bike. He created a pretty cool hookup to the sled rods right of the seat post. He had studded tires and pretty heavy sled. The first 3/4 of the way he was smoking everyone, even unhooked his sled at Togue Gate and came back to help another person's sled. When...

All My Layers Are Soaked - Now What?

wow. 4 pages. Looks like I missed a good thread when I was gone over the long weekend. I'll just add what extra clothing I usually carry in the pack: top and bottom midweight wool layer 1 pair of socks synthetic insulated vest or synthetic insulated jacket extra hat balaclava extra pair of...

Winter Katahdin via Abol Trail Questions

ooh, I forgot to add the most relevant part ... ;-) On the ski out I ran into a friend who happened to summit via Abol about a week before. He said, crampons on the exposed trail up all the way without major issues.

Winter Katahdin via Abol Trail Questions

Gotta love that mountain. :-) There ain't no easy way up in the winter. I just got back. I ended up as planned by NOT pulling a sled. The pack was a bit heavier than usual because I was carrying my mountaineering boots in the pack. First day we all went all the way to Chimney Pond. That is a...

    Federal Government hiring freeze...

We also have a similar hiring freeze here in Maine under similar loudmouth politician. All it does is it enables the government to indirectly do what has been happening to jobs around the country in the last decade: "avoid hiring people full time to achieve money savings from not paying for...

Hiker dies on Bondcliff Christmas Eve

Very similar in my case. Most of the time I hike without a shell. Usually I have one or two layers for my core. For example a wool midweight underwear top, plus synthetic insulated vest. Or stretchy synthetic onesie without sleeves and a wool midweight underwear top. This usually works for me...

Winter Katahdin via Abol Trail Questions

I am not using a sled. I did descend saddle in the winter, once. It was bitter cold and windy and the face was wind packed with snow so hard it was pretty icy. I used my ice axe to traverse laterally and down to spots where the rest of our group tossed anything that hindered their descent...

Winter Katahdin via Abol Trail Questions

this might sound ridiculous but I'm about to go on a trip to BSP, spending 3 nights at Chimney where the first day has us hauling from Abol Bridge to Chimney in one day. ... I thought about it a little and realized the possibility if the weather conditions were mint, to basically go up Abol and...

Winter Katahdin via Abol Trail Questions

Can anyone comment on what the ascent to Katahdin via Abol Trail is like in the winter? I have always done winter treks from Chimney Pond. I hiked up Katahdin via Abol 20 + years ago so I have an idea of the steepness but I was wondering what it is like on winter ascent?
