A great day on Jackson, and then...........

Glad you made it out. Very scarey situation. 1st of all, don't feel bad, it could happen to anyone. I would probably have done the same thing you did... Stu

Mt. Moosilauke - Beaver Brook Trail

Date of Hike – Sat. 1/12/2008 Conditions – Plenty of snow, but the trail was packed hard and topped with a hard layer of ice from the T/H to the summit. Equipment – Traction was essential, especially for the 1st 1.5 miles and then on the return. Comments – Trail conditions were actually much...

    Washing clothes....getting the funk out

Stink! We too have had the same problem. We tried everything to no avail. Finally traced it back to the "hard water" coming from our well. On someones advice we tried adding "Calgon", a water softener, (purchased off the supermarket shelf), to the wash. Very happy to say it worked!... Stu :)

    Mink Encounter

Otter Sardog, I would say otter. They are much more at home in the water then mink and much better swimmers. Mink are smaller and are better described as a "waters edge animal" although they will not hesitate to swim.

Mt Blanc - Hard Decision - Appreciate Input

Have Fun! Abster... been following your thread with interest. I'm with Giggy and his crew on this one. Go for it. A guided climb is the way to go. I will also be in Europe this summer (June), but with limited time and limited $. At the very least, I will do some sightseeing and lay the...

East Sleeper & Whiteface, Sunday, Feb 25, 2007

Nice T/R. This is a beautiful area. Being a little out of the way it's a hidden gem! I recently read a book, "Our Mountain Trips" by Ben & Jane English, which descibes this area in detail, circa 1900. It's interesting to relate to the same trails today. I highly recommend it. One question...

    Call me STU-pid!

Thanks I must not have been thinking too clearly that morning. I should have reasoned that the trail followed the brook and based on trail report beta I knew the trail had to be packed out, DUH! As a last resort, I easily could have asked directions at the cog base building, but did'nt. Oh...

    Call me STU-pid!

When I down-loaded a gps track of that morning it shows very clearly that we were only yards from the trail (I think!?) We were actually up near some water tanks to the right of the main building. It appears that we needed to go farther behind the smaller buildings. I just mentally psyched...

    Call me STU-pid!

Drove up the Cog Base road sat. with the intention of climbing Monroe. I haven't been on the A/R trail for years, so I could not remember where to hook up with the trail. Passed the "new" unplowed, untracked summer T.H. and parked next to one other car in the lower cog lot. I could'nt see any...

    0 degree or -20 degree?

-40 I agree with dave and Rik, or you could go with a -40 bag. ;) I did, and I've never been cold. Of course that does'nt mean I would want to camp @ -40°.

    T-shirt, sun, Moat Mountain views!

Forest- Tremendous images. Looks like you had a perfect-weather-day in the mountains.... Your tale of the pitbull was unbelievable. I don't know how I would have handled the same situation. Scarey for sure. I love dogs but they clearly need to be under control at all times. I think I would have...

    Yeti sighting on Carter-Moriah trail!

Impresive hike, congratulations! I prolly would have opted out at Carter Notch, the steep climb up Wildcat would have been put off to another day. You must be in great shape! How much did your pack weigh?

Hand & Foot Warmers Expiration Date

Handwarmers This thread got me thinking about these things. I started carrying them a few years ago for emergency only, but never even tried them. This Sat. I opened a pkg. at the Hancocks T.H. (dated June '08), and was very impressed. These things definetely put out some heat. Now part of my...

North Kinsman and Cannon hike & night ski 01-14-07

Hey Chip! This was quite an ambitous adventure. I was on the edge of my seat reading it. Also enjoyed the pics. I could imagine your feelings; running behind schedule, solo, injury, getting dark, still a mile to go......Stu

Everest: Beyond the Limit. Discussion Note ***WITH SPOILERS***

Just finished watching the last episode where the 1st team makes it to camp 3? Have to say I am really enjoying this, almost like being there. There is quite a bit of built in suspense, wondering about the weather and who will make it. Looking forward to the next "episode". Stu

Everest: Beyond the Limit. Discussion Note ***WITH SPOILERS***

I'm with Giggy and Jess on this one. Maybe I just have low standards but I enjoyed the camera footage of the mountain and such. I would rather watch this (when I'm too tired to read), than some of the other mindless stuff. (I tvo'ed it and fast forwarded through the commercials) ;)

    Hypothermia on Eisenhower

Darren - Very timely post with the winter climbing season coming on. With many of us hiking solo at times, your story is sobering. It does not change my mind about hiking alone, but it will make me hike safer. Thanks for sharing....Stu
