Hartford CT to Conway routes & construction ?

Route from Hartford Chip - been there, done that. Everyone has there own opinion, ......but, after trying just about every possible route over the last 40 years, we now have it down pat. 91N all the way to 93S to 302. That's right! Maybe a little longer mileage but considerably shorter in time...

    Water Filters?

Anyone care to share you're opinion on what brand/model water filter you like best? I've never used one, and I want to avoid having to purchase two or more before I get the one I should have bought in the first place. Thanks, Stu.

    Gore-tex footwear, yes or no

A vote for gortex! It looks like I'm in the minority but I like my new light-weight gortex hikers during mud season. Yea, my feet sweat a little but who cares? I wanted to be able to slosh thru puddles or mud and not worry about ruining my expensive leather boots and getting my feet soaked. So...

    Hiking in the rain?

Count me in as a.....Maybe. I don't mind hiking in a shower or drizzle especialy in warm weather (in fact I actually enjoy it), but not in an an all-day downpour event. Not fun IMHO! I I also will not hike in the winter if rain in the forecast. That said, I firmly believe that the absolute...

    Hikin' the Auto Road

Never hiked up the auto-road, but years ago we did hike down (sometime in the summer, it was hot!). The thing I remember most was how much longer it seemed to take. Personally, I would'nt do it again, too many nice trails to redline. just my opinion though!

    Jefferson/Washington 3/18

Good Deal! Giggy - congrats to you and your team on a safe and successfull summit assault! Combining Jefferson with "the rock pile" definitely sounds like an epic to me. Before your trip I got a chance to meet Kmac and we discussed the odds of making it to the top in light of the weather.. Good...

    Zealand/Hale to end the season

Lth Yea the weather was pretty nice, especially friday. In and out of the clouds all day. The sun would be out one minute, then a snow squall would come in. I must have adjusted my hat and gloves a couple dozen times. cheers...stu

    Zealand/Hale to end the season

continued The Lend-a-Hand trail is actually quite a nice hike, passing through some beautiful birch glades. I reached the summit, had a quick lunch and started down the Hale Brook Trail before I encountered anyone. I said hello to the 1st guy and barely got a response! The hike out...

    Zealand/Hale to end the season

Continuing in my quest to do some of the less glamorous peaks this winter, I decided to hike Zealand Mt. friday, stay at the hut that nite and tag Hale on the way out sat. I left 302 at 7 AM and hiked solo up the Zealand Road on the long slog up to ZeaCliff. Crampons were needed shortly after...

Color! I thought I would like the b&w, but the color image appears richer in the shadows. I vote go with the color on this one.... Either way, a very nice image! Stu

Hope for lovers of Sherpa snowshoes

Excellent thread Mo - I also have the 30" sherpa model with the "alpine binding" (circa 1982?). The shoes are still in excellent condition but the aluminum "cookie cutter" claws are trashed. We were just discussing this last weekend at the "Winter Workshop". Now I have hope of resurrecting...
