Plastic Boots - A very Merry Christmas!

try them with... Plastics are the way to go, but before you wear them outside, better check to make sure they will fit your snowshoe bindings and also your gaitors. I got new snowshoes for Christmas (total surprize!) :) but the bindings don't work well with my Koflach boots. So now I will...

what is the sickest thing you ever saw on the trail??

Hiking above treeline on Jefferson sometime in the 70's, we noticed a man and woman appoaching. When we got closer we were surprized to see that the female was....lets say "working on her tan!" (remember streaking?) Not that there is anything wrong with that! ;) :p

    #24.......denied!

Abster - absolutly, I would rather learn something on an "easier" mountain than above treeline, where a mistake could be serious! :)

    #24.......denied!

My son in law (Jeff) and I tagged N. Kinsman saturday 11/26 for #23 on "the list", but were turned back before completing our trip as planned. I had hoped to do the usual hike and hit the North and South Kinsman summits, via Fishin Jimmy and Kinsman Ridge Trail. Several unexpected factors...

    Moriah and the Carters

Interesting trip report and pictures. I did this same trip in October (in the rain) and loved it. I will get back there someday in good weather!

    Winter???

So does anyone know offhand when winter officially starts? Do you have any special plans to usher in the new season? Last year I solo climbed Mt. Adams on the 1st day and stayed at Greyknob. This year I'm considering doing Madison. :)

    Lunch ideas for winter hikes

Those small cans of smoked, salted, almonds are sooo goood on the trail. I can 2nd the smoked salmon bagelwich. Also I like to mix chunks of semi-sweet dark chocolate and shredded coconut.....Also clementines, mmm clementines. Snacking and eating while hiking is one of life's small pleasures. :p

    When Are Stabilicers Not Enough?

I also have a pair of stabilicers (the blue ones). I found they worked better on the uphill terrain. A few times, on the steeper downhills, they would slip off my heel. In one incident I slipped and fell. I solved this by attaching a small bungee cord or velcro strap from the heel to toe over...

    No Cats in New York..........

I find reading threads about the existence of big cats in the North East intriguing. There was a web site devoted to this subject a while back. It was called something along the lines of "New England Mountain Lion Discussion Board". I am also fascinated by the the thought of wolves returning to...

    Fisher Cat

Fisher @ the "Log Cabin" Several years ago we had a Fisher encounter at the RMC's Log Cabin on Lowes Path. We were actually feeding it and it would approach to about 10 yards without spooking! Stu

    Cat sighting!!!!!!!!!

Bobcats Previous posters are correct, the lynx is extremely rare in the lower 48. They are a "protected" species in all of New England, i.e. they cannot be hunted or trapped. On the other hand, bobcats are fairly common, even in southern New England. I have pictures of two bobcats taken in a...

    Stonybrook trail ?

High Water? Not sure if this helps any, but during the October monsoon I was not able to make the 2nd stream crossing. The brook was a raging torrent. I had to go up on the other side and hook up with the trail there. With all the snow up there now it would'nt surprise me if the brook was...

    wild true backpacking story

avatar? Starchild, where was your avatar picture taken? It looks exactly like the log I tried to cross on Stoney Brook on Sunday. I also tried sitting down and inching my way across. Very scarey. The brook was a torrent. Bottom line, it did'nt feel right, so I did the safe thing, hiked back...

    Monroe,Washington,Clay via Ammon.& Jewel ?

Lions Head Chip, there are so many excellent approaches to Washington. For your first time up I suggest checking out Pinkham Notch Camp and ascending via Lion Head, one of the classic routes. If the weather cooperates you'll have a great time. Stu :)
