    Water Bottles -- 2022

Tim, what kind of Nalgene's do you use, HDPE, old-school Lexan, or Tritan? I used to use boiling water, but switched to hot tap, to reduce the chance of leaching chemicals. that Tritan is no safer than Lexan.

    Water Bottles -- 2022

One Nalgene full of hot Gookinaid goes in a discontinued Granite Gear Aquatherm insulated bottle holder strapped to the exterior of my winter pack and another is buried in the pack, usually under my Feathered Friends down jacket. A thermos full of hot Constant Comment tea with a significant pour...

    Camel's Hump

The beginning of the Forest City Trail is lower down the mountain, below the main Huntington trailhead, at about the 1,400' contour. The Mapbuilder topo puts them both around 2.0 miles. If the GMC used a wheel, I'd go by those figures. However, if you're starting from the main Huntington...

Not a great start to MLK weekend

With the too-thin-for-BC-skiing snowpack and ski passes blacked out, I headed up South Flat today. Conditions were prime for hiking.

    "Old School" Winter 4K Routes

    A) Flagging below treeline here in the Northeast is unnecessary. B) It invariably gets left behind. C) It can lead to the formation of herd paths much more quickly. D) It's littering Speaking of wanding, a number of years ago I found a half dozen or so wands—tomato stakes with surveyor's...

    Handwarmers?

I, too, suffer from Raynaud's. I regularly use chemical toe warmers, opening the package about ten minutes before I put my feet in my boots. They decrease in effectiveness as the day progresses, because of lack of airflow. For my hands, I use chemical warmers infrequently. It's key for me to...

    Cog Railroad Expanding Winter Operations

The cut line out of Monroe Brook isn't decades old. I'm all for thinning out lines, but the Presis isn't a place for that. I think for many the Presis have long been one of the Northeast's crowning test pieces, one of the few places where we can access committing alpine BC lines. It loses some...

N.E. Clean Power Connect in Maine - Should we care ?

I don't think that I've seen a more incorrect statement of VFTT before. Life does not exist without solar energy. Boats don't sail and blowdowns don't make a bushwhacker's life misery without wind energy.

Winter Hiking Season over before it started.

^^^ THIS! I don't know why this isn't taught in First Aid and WFA courses. If you're going to have an accident, ALWAYS do it in an easily accessible place near a lot of people. It's one of the easiest ways to tell the difference between a well-prepared, experienced hiker and a touron.

Winter Hiking Season over before it started.

That really stinks! I am sorry, Peakbagger, and wish you the speediest and most full recovery. Regarding the extra-heavy-duty bottoms and your inability to don them, this has always been my fear with regard to non-full-side-zip pants for insulation and shell layers. This is good information to...

Lost Hiker on Isolation - Not a nice night to be out

No, we need mechanical engineers. At least I did. It turns out that I'd not properly learned how to tie my shoelaces as a child, and was using the granny knot instead of the square knot. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/04/13/science/why-shoelaces-undone-untied.html (OTH, I did teach myself how to...

Lost Hiker on Isolation - Not a nice night to be out

No, it doesn't. Tragedy-free hikes neither validate nor invalidate the adequacy of a system or kit. Most of hopefully will never be in a life-threatening situation, so our kit for that scenario is never tested. If your system is never put to a true test then you don't know if it will be...

Lost Hiker on Isolation - Not a nice night to be out

In defense of B the Hiker—Brian—he never said you were lucky to have never been in trouble. He said that your reasoning was a logical fallacy and he stated why. If there is one mistake Brian made, it's that he assumed that you had never been in a life-threatening, worst-case situation with your...

USGS Topo Map Giveaway on VFTT

Absolutely, there is. The solar wind is attracted to the Earth's magnetic poles, hence the location of the auroras around the poles. If a Coronal Mass Ejection is massive enough, which the Carrington Event certainly was, the geomagnetic storm will mess with compasses' effectiveness.

USGS Topo Map Giveaway on VFTT

Thanks again, Jazzbo! I love Caltopo, but there's something especially nice about pouring over physical maps. They were also nice to have in the car when I was in Pittsburg last weekend in case I needed to make any changes to my plans. After, yes, but not during. My compass would not work...
