Fitness levels and training (What the HECK!!?)

Yeah, they know a lot more about that stuff now than when he was racing which was back in the days of non-indexed derailleurs, toe straps, and brake cables flapping in the breeze. They were basically looking for a sport to keep up the conditioning when it was too cold and snowy to train and...

Fitness levels and training (What the HECK!!?)

First of all, congrats on the lifestyle and body changes! I am by no means an expert on this so I will give my thoughts from my personal experience: I am not athletically gifted. Not the fastest, not the strongest, always a bit overweight (think husky build). But I could go uphill for hours...

    Lonesome Lake

What the other said.... I can vouch it's very refreshing on a hot day and the lake is actually rather nice - I have been in far worse. Kinsman Pond was a little more mucky - but still a welcome relief after huffing up the F-in jimmy with a full pack. Yes, I swam in both on the same day.

    NH48 Winter Record Attempt 1/16/10 -

Just when you think you don't have anything left to give, let that little ditty run through your head a few dozen times. If you don't muster any motivation from it, the accompanying thoughts form the movie are sure to give you a chuckle. It's been in my .sig file for a long time | | V

Question about getting to Owls Head

Back then they closed the trestle over Black Brook because of safety concerns and built a new bridge alongside of it. (Anyone know when the steel girder by-pass was constructed? It looked fairly new in the mid 80s when I went over it, and my dad remembers the trail used the trestle itself in...

    Snowshoes

RUP, If you go that route check several Walmart stores. I've found their prices on EVERYTHING can vary by as much as 10% between stores that are less than 30 miles apart. And FWIW, I think LL Bean branded 'shoes are the same ones manufactured for/by the Yukon Charley brand. They sure look...

Losing Weight and Getting into Shape

That's good advice for everyone whether on a "diet" or not. I did that this fall with a long overdue physical. The numbers were good-to-excellent, except for my triglycerides which were on the high end of the normal range. Hopefully my continued exercise and better eating habits will help that.

    Snowshoes

Listed on Walmart.com for $84.88 for 8"x21" model. Not too bad, but if you think you'll be hiking packed, crusty snow on moderate terrain I would suggest getting the MSR Denali Classics solely for the unbeatable crampon rails on the bottom. Superb traction and I'll often wear them just for the...

    Lake Champlain Bridge closed

It's certainly possible. Much cheaper to remove and replace this way. If it were not structurally unsound (and only structurally deficient) I assume it would need to be replaced without disrupting use. This would entail acquiring land on both sides, constructing a new bridge alongside the...

And try not to lick the lids of any cans this time around! Good luck Mats and Co.!

    It's not funny

The hike to Carter Notch I brought up in the "hut temperature" thread was done in such a time. 19-mile brook was well packed, but the path to Wildcat A was covered with about 16" of unmolested snow. Before the internet, every hike was planned with a "best guess" as to trail and weather...

Comparison of indoor vs outdoor temperatures of huts in the winter

Ditto those comments, and can confirm that the bunkhouses get almost as cold as the outside, but with less wind. I stayed there many moons ago the day after Thanksgiving and the overnight temps were in the single digits (3 deg F maybe?). I slept in some of my clothes inside a 20 degree bag and...

    Hiker Rescued from Mt Moosilauke

My dad didn't get the memo either. He gave up on doing full-distance Ironman races a year or so ago, but he's retiring to Arizona this summer (if all goes well) so that he hike the Grand Canyon whenever the mood strikes him, maybe several times a week. You're only as old as you let yourself be.

Gym aka Health Club Membership Costs

Noticed a commercial on the tube last night: Planet Fitness is running a special through 1/8/2010 - $1 annual fee and $10/month.

Losing Weight and Getting into Shape

Gained a pound since the week before Christmas. Although I was at home on vacation the whole time I didn't set foot on the treadmill, so I think I did well considering how much free reign I had given myself. Now it's time to reel myself back in and start exercising again. Maybe the next 15...

    Whitefield Wind Turbine

I don't know if I buy it. I mean, the spot I'm typing this from was under a glacier less than 10,000 years ago which is just a blink of an eye in the age of the earth. Our impact is significantly less than that. The earth warms, the earth cools, and I think our impact is rather insignificant...

    So, what'd you get?

Between April and December I worked my tail off to shed 30 pounds and get myself a new physique that I can be proud of, and my wife rewarded me with some new clothes that flatter my slimmer frame. Woo Hoo! This year I set up a skating rink in the backyard so the kids (3 and 7) can...

    Whitefield Wind Turbine

Thanks for those links Doug. And there was, and maybe there still is, a sizable tax credit of almost 30% (20% fed, 10% state of MA) for qualifying solar installations. However, the installed cost of a solar hot-water system for my home is around $4500 to serve a family of 4. That's still...

    Whitefield Wind Turbine

Question 1: Cost. Like it or not, land is cheaper in the hills, and you only need 1/20th of it there. Apparently, "windfactories" do not require hundreds of towers. And it looks like wind energy is here to stay. Princeton Municipal Light Department just replaced 4 aging and dilapidated wind...

    Breaking Your New Year Resolutions

My best friend is like that, and I know the only reliable way to reach him is via text so I also chose that option. And I don't see my cell phone usage going down as I use it mostly for work and I'm expecting to be busier this year than ever before. And I REFUSE to address my addiction to...
