In an attempt to get the kidos into hiking a little more than they are, we are planning a week vacation this summer in NH...one place that I would like to have them "hike" into is Lonesome Lake...it is so beautiful.

They had a question, can you swin in Lonesome Lake?

Thanks.

I don't know the answer to your question. I would hope that you could.

However the fondest memories of my early childhood is my folks marching us into the various huts just to see them. For me it was the start of a life long love of the mountains. My sister can't stand hiking and my brother only hikes out of the utmost necessity now. One out of three ain't bad. I can remember my father saying "Let's go see that new one!" (Mizpah 1965)
I think taking kids to a nice place and doing cool things is a great idea (Hint: Black Mt Cabin overnight at -5 F is not the best place to start) don't ask me how I know.

watch out for leeches...not a big deal but I have seen them there.

What the other said....

I can vouch it's very refreshing on a hot day and the lake is actually rather nice - I have been in far worse. Kinsman Pond was a little more mucky - but still a welcome relief after huffing up the F-in jimmy with a full pack. Yes, I swam in both on the same day.

Took my kids there when they were under 10. By the time they were teenagers they had all stopped hiking. Now that they are in there 20's and 30's they have come back to hiking with me a few times a year. Its is nice to reconnec with your children on a 3 day camping trip. Definitely worth the investment.

he he he...I remember going UP jimmy trail last weekend...thinking "oh how NICE...up some, down some, flat some...what a refreshing trail"...THEN...going back "down" the trail to get back to the car (after bagging N & S Kinsman)...NOT SO NICE!!!! I'm ready to go DOWN!!! And the trail goes UP...oh yea...up some more...oh YEA...a bit more!!! GRRRRRRR:mad:

Like others said, watch the leeches. In spring (weekend before full service) we don't swim, but we do hang around the dam and wade in the water. My son and nieces would catch leeches and play with them until they seemed to be ready to bite, then toss them back in. You can also see them feeding on what look like fish eggs. It's kinda fun.

I was in the lake once, but didn't linger and came out leech-free.

And if that battered rowboat is still up there, any boaters might have to swim back to shore. :)
