    Hiker Dies on Haystack Mtn.

I'm sorry I never had the pleasure of meeting Ray. He sounds like a great guy. My condolences to the family and to Jason and Marty who were there with Ray. I can't imagine how you must have felt. Sadly, this is almost exactly one year since we lost another dear friend and VFTT'r, Bill Bowden...

One down 48 to go - Aaron gets his first 48 - September 2, 2008

Way to go Aaron! Wish I had known about hiking when my kids were young. Heck, when I was young.

    1st 4K with Gramps

Sorry. I'm not suggesting that. :( Wish I was. They do that too, to excess in my opinion, to the point of forearm tendonitis in Em's case. It's an addiction. They can't go even a few minutes without texting someone or asking if they can use the computer to check facebook. To some extent, it's...

    1st 4K with Gramps

The last week of August is a time we look forward to each summer. That's when two of our grand-kids come to Waterville Valley to visit for a week without their parents. We have been able to take Alex, now 12, on a few hikes over the past few years, but his sister Emily, 15, has always had...

    What is your "White Whale?"

I don't know if these really qualify as White Whales since I only turned back once on each but they are the last 2 of the 48's for me- Owlshead and Whiteface. Hiked all the way to the bottom of Owlshead slide but had to turn back cause my heels were rubbed raw to the bone (thought the boots were...

A Week in Glacier Nat'l Park

Just returned from a very civilized trip to Glacier National Park. We hiked 7-10 miles a day on some of the more well known trails, nothing especially challenging. Most were at 5-7000 feet and ranged from 300 to 1600 ft of elev gain. We stayed at three different Park Lodges. The...

The Helmet Was Very Good Idea

I wonder if the lack of reduction of serious injury in the New Zealand experiment was due to the helmet wearers taking more chances ???? Was terrain and speed a controlled part of the experiment? Not likely possible to quantify that.

Hiker mistaken for a bear shot and killed in Wa.

A case in point- I was deer hunting with a friend in the Lake Canandaigua area of NYS when we were both 18 (a very long time ago!!!). We were working our way up a steep hillside about 50 yds apart (we thought) when I ran into a thicket so dense that the only way through was to crawl for 10-15...

    airplane prohibited items?

We've collapsed ours and put them in checked luggage. No problem. Styrofoam on the tips is a good idea, as is taking out any matches.

    Livermore camping

Just a quick note on the time issue. The last time I did this, I took the Scaur Ridge Tr up. Stopped to chat with a group of hikers headed up the North Slide. We all arrived at N. Tri at the same time. I'm also not an especially fast hiker and have always done the loop as a day trip with plenty...

Jewell Trail Any opinions on the Jewell Trail? I think there is one crossing early on.

    Avoiding high water this weekend

I don't recall any water crossings on the Old Bridal path to Lafayette/Lincoln if going out and back, but there are a couple of ledges that could be slippery. Falling Waters trail has stream crossings. Water is definitely an issue for Galehead. Wouldn't go there. Harry

more New England mountain lion rumors

It would be interesting to know exactly when and where on the trail they spotted the cat whether mtn lion or not. The upper half of the Goodrich Rock Trail is pretty wild and remote feeling, with large glacial erratics, steep hillside and lots of hiding places, even though it is so close to...

    Strange Rash

Thanks All The lacing info is very helpful. We will definitely experiment with that. I included the link again here as I think many would find it of interest. http://www.backpacker.com/april_200...ear/5245?page=1 The rash is definitely fading. No pictures available. Thanks so much to all who...

    Strange Rash

Thanks Papa Bear. It was actually a couple that we hiked with in Switzerland last summer, both Doctors, that first suggested it was pressure related and nothing to be overly concerned about. They said they had seen it before. Wish they had suggested taking the lacing pressure off the shins. If...
