Foliage report in White Mountains and valleys....

Was along the Kanc and color there is at peak already. (ok technically its probably on the side of just before peak, whatever that is, because there hasn't been too much leaf drop) Really nice foliage year in my opinion and those of all the professional photographers from around the country I...

Rob Brook Trail -- Redliner Question

Thank you both for the info. Kltilton-- Did sound interesting especially this time of year. I was thinking it might be nice as part of day hitting the shorter trails off the kanc for foliage and moose sighting maybe. But I think I'll put it on the backburner.

Rob Brook Trail -- Redliner Question

I noticed that the Rob Brook Trail off Bear Notch Road near the Kanc and Swift River trails is not listed on the newer 29th edition spreadsheet. Is that a mistake, or is there a reason it was taken intentionally off the list? Do I need to hike it to be a redliner? I had started the endeavor...

***Important*** Assault @ Clarendon Shelter in Green Mtns SAturday 8/28

I had recently been reading through the Long Trail guide and it noted that a lot of homeless people camp in the vicinity of Clarendon Gorge off RT 103 and warns against camping near 103 or parking there long term. The shelter is very close to the road. I wonder if this is a problem area...

When does a memorial become trash in a backcountry setting?

Kevin, thank you for your service! As it so happens, my father did the exact same thing as you. In response to the draft, my dad joined the Air Force during Vietnam and served 5 1/2 years. So please know my thank you is sincere. I feel my previous comments are relevant given the direction...

When does a memorial become trash in a backcountry setting?

Put me in the +1 column for those who want to state my support, respect, and admiration for those who served. All of those who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan volunteered. If they didn't, you might be drafted. I can understand where Kevin (Kevin, Judy and Emma) is coming from, and some of...

Pine Martens and the Big Tom Field Willey Figure 8 Loop 6/9/2013

Tim-- thanks for the ID. I knew it was different than the skunk cabbage that is dominant in southern new England. Paradox-- I have noticed your avatar before. I guess these martins have been in the area for a while then and must be well established in the Willey range. Kerry-- I had...

Pine Martens and the Big Tom Field Willey Figure 8 Loop 6/9/2013

Rolling Rock-- Wow, a dozen martens in that junction in winter! Guess this must be their hotspot in the Whites. Tomcat-- I really have to get a zoom lens for my DSLR, its 3x max way less than point and shoots. I've been lucky enough to get face to face with moose, spruce grouse, and martens...

    carlo loop backpack 6-12+6-13-13

That is a really great loop which I've done too. The alpine meadows are a unique treat. Slippery is the permanent condition of the Mahoosuc in that stretch. A bit "scary" is apt with a big pack--it didn't seem like normal hiking with all the wet ledge/rungs or slick downslope facing bog bridging.

Pine Martens and the Big Tom Field Willey Figure 8 Loop 6/9/2013

Part II Next stop: Thoreau Falls. A rewarding spot, it felt more remote than a lot of falls and I am sure it’s skipped by most peakbaggers. The crossing to get down to the bottom of the falls was a bit sketchy. You have to go over a narrow channel too wide to just step across and use a...

Mt Willey, Mt Field, Mt Tom 6-9-2013

Thanks for sharing. I must have been chatting with you at the willey house parking right before starting up the Kedron Flume. I was doing the bigger TFW loop. Glad you guys had a good day out and made it up the ladders with your dog. Nice wildlife sightings too. I had five minutes with a...

Kedron Flume water crossing after rain?

Thanks for the first hand advice. I didn't think it would be a big deal, but didn't have any detailed info from previous reports or the WMG about the crossing at the Flume.

Kedron Flume water crossing after rain?

Does anyone know if the crossing on the Kedron Flume trail would be potentially undoable after a decent rain like last night? Was thinking of doing a big TFW loop that way tomorrow (sunday 6/9), and deciding whether to take Kedron or just stick with Ethan Pond both ways. (trying to maximize...

Memorial Day Snow on Moosiluake 5/27/13

That was just it-- the uniqueness of the day and conditions and the mindset they created. I have been lucky enough to hike out West, 200 4ks, and 2400 miles in the last 3 years alone, and plenty of real winter peaks. So I know the Whites aren't the Himalaya or even the Rockies, and the snow...

Memorial Day Snow on Moosiluake 5/27/13

When I was a boy of eight, I once daydreamed during a hot, muggy Memorial day family cookout that it would start to snow and blanket everything. I dismissed it, even then, as impossible. Yesterday it happened: Well I know it certainly isn’t impossible for it to snow in the Whites in late...

    Canister stoves on airplanes

Thanks to all of you who responded. I guess I should be fine with the pocket rocket, subject to the individual who checks out my bag. Its only a $40 item so its worth the risk of confiscation. Good to get some reassurance though! Max-- great guess as to the destination. It is indeed the...

    Canister stoves on airplanes

This is a very old thread, but the only one I saw on this topic. Has anyone flown recently with a stove? Specifically I was looking to fly with my MSR pocket rocket on Southwest and was wondering if that was ok to go with check baggage? I was not planning on bringing the actual fuel...

    Isolation Sat 3/2/13

We gave Iso a go today and had to turn back right before Davis Path junction after exhausting trail breaking. We broke it out to there (including a version of the engine hill bushwack, that starts a few hundred feet down Rocky branch past the "usual" spot). It was just the 3 of us so snowshoes...

    Isolation Sat 3/2/13

A group of 3 of us will be giving Isolation via usual winter route (Rocky Branch/Engine Hill Bushwhack/ Isolation Trail) a shot tomorrow. We aren't looking for extra partners, but figured I'd just put that out there if people were thinking about heading out there (running out of time to finish...
