    Our Personal Health Plans

Spend lots of time with good people (see VFTT member list). Don't pin your hopes to the whims of others. If possible, have a couple kids, work your tail off trying to raise them well (of course that includes getting them out into the mountains), then relax and watch them become their own persons.

    Tripyramids for 47 & 48: a carbohydrate extravaganza

Congratulations again to both of you. I'm glad our group could watch you celebrate from 1/4 mile away. That's a great climb to learn just how deconditioned one really is. :o Rock shoes would have come in really handy. Marchowes, I went looking for you on the left side of the North Slide...

MichaelJ finishes Hundred Highest on Boundary!

Nice work, Michael--congratulations! After all that uphill, I'll bet you're ready for the downhill.

    Caribou, too

Hey, glad you two enjoyed yourselves. It's a GREAT little mountain, isn't it? But those berries must have ripened in the past week, because I was quite sure I had eaten all of them! :D

    Caribou Valley Road

You mean the one MEB drove across a year or 2 ago? The one before the AT crossing has deep holes in the wheel ruts, especially at the far end. It's doable in a high clearance vehicle (at least it was last fall), but I don't think I'd advise taking a Prius across! I haven't tried the...

Coulda been worse . . . he might have caught you with an expression like mine! :p Except you probably never wear an expression like that. No one should, really. Great shots, Michael, except for that one. But you owe me a good one next year.

"No Shortcuts to the Top" by Ed Viesturs

Kinda like the recent VFTT team on Denali, turning around 400 feet below the summit. I'm glad I have smart friends!

    Mt. Caribou (Evans Notch)

Having missed Saturday’s beautiful weather (at least it was on the coast), I couldn’t pass again on Sunday. There are a few nice things about climbing Mount Caribou in Evans Notch: I first climbed it many years ago; it was one of my kids’ early hikes; and there are GREAT Views From The Top...

    Gimps on Garfield

Nice work, both of you! Doug, I hope Gris didn't slow you down too much; he tends to go off into these musical reveries sometimes! :D

Unprepared Hikers On Washington-Union Leader Article

Quietman, posting conditions sounds like a really good idea (assuming the shuttle drivers and whoever supplies the reports wouldn't mind ;) ). Seems to me, though, that the people who get in trouble are often the very people who don't know how to assess accurately their own ability levels. That...

    Remembering on Mt. Washington, 7/26

Bobby, great shots (especially the one of you and Eric) from what's clearly a bittersweet hike. It says a lot that so many people still do it after all those years, and for you and Eric it's even more special. He's a lucky son to be able to share that kind of experience with you, and it's...

    Bearly Live 2008

Whew! Thanks for the second post, Wu, I was afraid after reading your first that you had sarcasticized yourself all the way around to the other end of your real feelings! But I now see that the real Dr. Wu is still alive and well and with us. Thanks so much to everyone who came and...

Bearly Live '08: July 25-27, Oxford, ME

A heads up for folks who are making it a day (or evening, or night . . .) trip: parking will be tough. According to Sherp (who is there and out of internet range) the best place to park is up at the end of the Campground Road (not Rabbit Valley Road). It's then about a 1000 foot walk to BL...

    July 4th Weekend in Baxter/My 67 Finale

Congratulations, Ross! It's not the time it takes (in my case 32 years  ), it's taking the time.
