I'd like to start by thanking Mad Townie for his "scouting report" of this hike a week earlier... :) http://www.vftt.org/forums/showthread.php?t=24390

Nadine had been foolish enough to suggest that we should do a hike together sometime this summer. I suggested Caribou (from Evans Notch) as a nice peak about midway between our respective homes. I hadn't done it before and it was on a list for her, so we agreed to hike it on Sunday (17th). The weather forecast even looked good(!)...

On the drive up, Lafayette was in and out of the clouds; everything else in Franconia Notch was clear. The Northern Prezzy summits, however, were socked in as I passed by on Rte 2.

We met as planned and headed up Caribou Trail. Only the first stream crossing caused any problem, but I crossed easily with my poles and tossed them back for Nadine to use. (There were also some muddy spots, but none were bad enough to cause any problems.) Kees falls was very nice, we stopped and detoured down the to stream below to get a better view. The hike continued uneventfully, just a pleasant uphill stroll through the woods. We reached the junction with the Mud Brook trail, soon a viewpoint to the north, and then the slabby summit.

There were 360 degree views from the summit, including the Royces, Baldfaces, Carters, Prezzies, Mahousucs and more. Mad Townie had kindly left us some blueberries... :) We hung around for lunch and headed down.

The first problem was finding our way off the summit--the direct route would have led over a small cliff. A bit of searching and a faded yellow blaze pointed the way. There were a few small cairns and faded blazes that showed the way down over the next several ledges although some searching was required in one spot. I had a bit of difficulty with some steep spots getting off the ledges (the leg is still a bit weak), but manged to make it down. Once we got below the ledges, it was fairly easy going. Again a few spots of mud, but nothing that caused any undue difficulty.

All in all, a pleasant hike on a nice day. And no rain!

Pics to follow.

Hey, glad you two enjoyed yourselves. It's a GREAT little mountain, isn't it?

But those berries must have ripened in the past week, because I was quite sure I had eaten all of them! :D

Yep. A nice mellow hike with nice views from the top. Just right for the current state of my leg.

Either that or your arms were very short. I hardly had to break stride to pick them along the trail...

Nice Tr from a very beautiful place! Looks like you're up to full strength.
Thanks--it is a nice spot. (I had to cheat and use Google Earth to help me identify some of the peaks in the pics...)

Unfortunately, it will be a while still before I reach full strength. It took me two weeks to recover from Garfield and I'm just beginning to feel recovered from Caribou and perhaps should wait another week before hiking again. I also have difficulty with steep sections. I will need to stick to easier hikes and longer recovery periods for a while yet, but easier hikes can be just as enjoyable as bigger ones.
