    Bear Canisters

Good advice. A small point, but I've noticed that all of the major canisters (Garcia, Bearvault, Bearikade) refer to their canisters as "bear resistant", not "bear proof". Possibly for legal reasons, I'm not sure. There's always the possibility that another Yellow-Yellow might come along.

    Stabilicer straps: How to?

http://www.nationalrunningcenter.com/32North-STABILicers-Sport-Replacement-Cleats/productinfo/32NORTHCL/ Suggestion: consider Microspikes as an alternative: http://www.rei.com/product/774966 I've used both, and Microspikes, in my opinion, are superior (light-weight, easy to put on, no screws...

Ringing in the New Year on Baxter Mt. (NY)

In keeping with our long-standing tradition, which we started just last year, we rang in the New Year on a mountaintop. The festivities actually started at the Ark Trail Inn in Upper Jay, where a gathering of hikers brought and ate way too much delicious food. Fighting off the urge to go to...

Hi Gordon, Tom Haskins runs a shuttle service for NPT hikers. Info is here. Best info may be at one of the links I mentioned above: http://www.nptrail.org

    Northville Placid Trail...

Our thruhike was 11 days. Carrying a tent is always a good idea, as lean-tos may be full. Do to a grossly oversized group at Tirrell Pond, we tented that night. At Duck Hole, both lean-tos were occupied, though one was by campers who had set up their tent inside of one of the lean-tos (a big...

VFTT dog hike in November - Greylock ?

Indeed it was! The weather, though a tad breezy, was really quite nice, and the Gould trail was quite pleasant and well maintained. Nice conversations with all. Thanks to Alan for leading another great Y hike.

Beaver Kill Range and High Falls - 11-3-10

I had to think twice about that head count, then realized that one of the participants had four legs. :)

I don't know the particulars about these photos, except to say that they have made the rounds on the internet for several years now! :D

Man walks across America in 152 days

Personally I couldn't care less about his light bills. I accept the event for the accomplishment it was. Whatever is behind the scenes is his business. When is one "too old" to hike the AT? http://www.appalachiantrail.org/site/c.mqLTIYOwGlF/b.4805581/k.6803/Noteworthy_2000Milers.htm

    Magalloway Mt.- Camp on Top!

The cabin was open the day we were there. I only took a peek in, but it looked quite nice. Our friends went in and took some pictures. I'll post them when I get them.

    Magalloway Mt.- Camp on Top!

Coincidentally we were just up there this past week. The climb is steep but short, with two trails to choose from. The ranger happened to be in the cab and was quite helpful pointing out things about the area. The cab has been newly renovated and is one of the nicest ones I have ever seen! A...

Cortisone shot to relieve back pains

I didn't mention it in my post above, but for about a second I had the same mega-volt shock that you experienced. The doctor apologized. However, no cold sweats, no numbness. Otherwise, I'd say the procedure was "uncomfortable", a feeling of pressure, but not too painful. But that was my...

Cortisone shot to relieve back pains

I had it done for sciatica (disc pressing on the sciatic nerve). I was given two shots in my spine and was told that if it works I should get relief within 72 hours, otherwise it probably wouldn't help. Within about 11 hours I could have danced (assuming I knew how to!). Worked like a charm...

    Sleeping bag suggestions

I have the Whitney as well but have not used it on a winter overnight yet. Other seasons I have a Western Mountaineering down bag (1 lb) and a Marmot 15 degree bag. I also use a Sea-to-Summit waterproof compression sack inside of the Whitney. When using the Western Mountaineering bag, I can...

    Vanderwhacker trail access

We did it in our Subaru last year with a friend who had a car with less clearance (can't remember what car he had). Both of us made it with no trouble. I'm not sure about the mini-van's clearance, but my sense of the road is that it is doable as long as you go VERY slowly, as we did, and...
