A Different Kind of Big Mountain Experience

Yes, it's up to Darren of course. But I've seen threads here before on both paddling and skiing, and there was apparently no problem with them.

fate of Marcy Dam? (muddy swamp or pond)

Not an injury, but I had surgery for Dupuytren's contracture. I had my left hand successfully operated on a couple of summers ago for the same thing. It will be a few weeks at least before I can hike again.

fate of Marcy Dam? (muddy swamp or pond)

No, I have fingers sticking out of the end of the bandage, and they're becoming increasingly mobile, even with the stitches in the palm. :D

fate of Marcy Dam? (muddy swamp or pond)

Interesting though old article on this and related DEC topics. Didn't they do some repairs on a leak in Marcy Dam a couple of years ago?

    supplements?

I once took Glucosamine/Chondroitin (sp?) for a neck injury. At the time, I was told I had to take it for several months before it would start to work, and also that there was no definitive data indicating that it worked at all. I took it for about six months. My neck got better, but I don't...

    Long Path planning

Although it is an Adirondack style lean-to, to my knowledge it has always been referred to as a "warming hut" and I believe used to have a sign to that effect. It used to have a warming barrel right in the lean-to. My guess (only a guess) is that it is not intended for overnight use, but the...

    Long Path planning

I live about 10 minutes from Altamont. I could check for you the next time I'm out and about, though I'm not all that familiar enough with the town to be able to recommend places to park. There have been several re-routings of the trail up this way in recent years. Some discussion about the...

    Pine Island/Pack Saddle Hike 1-1-09

Yeah, right. Just watch everyone drop out at the last minute. That's the way it always happens on finishes.:D

    Cliff from the Flowed Lands

A little dated, but here is a TR of a hike from this approach. http://www.vftt.org/forums/showthread.php?t=5672

A Finish but No End in Sight (H&F complete the 35)

Congratulations to you both! Sorry we couldn't be there. But sometimes it's nice to enjoy the accomplishment in private (as we did on our ADK 46th). Looking forward to hiking with you both again. Dick

    grand canyon hike?

We didn't mean to scare people. It was actually a wonderful, successful trip, but with lessons learned. We only wanted to tell our story, and highlight some of the mistakes we (as a group) made: hike EARLY and LATE in the day stay TOGETHER START HYDRATED and STAY HYDRATED (plan H2O AHEAD); fill...

    grand canyon hike?

Good advice above. We did a 5-day backpack (Hermit Trail) in mid-May a couple of years ago and it was 104 degrees down below. Good information here. More info here. FWIW, learn of our many mistakes in our TR: #1 #2 #3 My wife's pictures

    Northville-Placid Trail record

I've done some of it in winter, but would never consider it for the length of time we're planning to be out there. Yes, wonderful reports!

Where's all the Trail Condition Reviews?

My recollection, from the one time I met him (RPR) was it was merely a c. 5" stuffed animal attached to his hip belt.

    Car GPS won't give coordinates?

Being over 50 as well, we had similar issue!:D It depends upon the unit you have. Ours (265WT) doesn't support multi-point routing, and will do only do one point per route. I got this from a Garmin rep: "IN order to input coordinates you will go to "Where to" then press the down arrow...

    Microspike failure

Glad it worked out for you. My wife (Edelweiss) just had the same thing happen in the Catskills. She wore them most of the way back, but it continued to slip around, due to the breakage. She is in the process of contacting Kahtoola. I haven't worn mine yet this season. Last year they worked...

    Did someone lose a piano?

As both a professional pianist and longtime hiker, one would think I could add something to this thread... but as you can see, I have nothing to offer. Must be past my bedtime. :o:(:mad:
