New Bridge at Johns Brook Int. Outpost

Gee, they replace bridges there about as fast as they do here in Massachusetts. The project must've gotten bogged down in the design phase.

New Hampshire Fire Tower Cut Backs

Was at the Croydon Tower last weekend, which was locked and not staffed. The view from the tower steps and the bare rocks beneath was, indeed, unique and impressive. Felt like a 4k with 2k prominence. jt

    Peak Above the Nubble 4/6

Just wondering... Did anyone have the tools necessary to rehang that can on an upright tree?

Scaur Peak via Pine Bend Brook 4/3/08

Deep snow (4-5 feet) was consolidated well enough that I started with micro spikes, switched to crampons at 2400', and made to to the top without unlashing the snowshoes. Half the snow bridges are gone now, but the creek crossings weren't much of a problem. Killer views of Carrigain, Washington...

Sawtooth #3 – ski, shoe, snow, sun and solo … with pictures

Sean gets the blue ribbon for best report of the year. Excellent descriptive narration puts the reader right there. Fantastic images, too. I could feel myself vicariously clawing my way up that cliff.... From the looks of your positioning with the sign, there must be at least six feet of snow...

    Who's got the flu?

I've had the flu-like viral whatever for about two weeks now. When I was at the absolute nadir, coughing, sneezing, aching, no energy, (couldn't conceive of ever again climbing a mountain) my brother called from Rochester, N.Y. to say my 91 year old Mom, in a nursing home, had the same thing...

    Forty Six at last!

Phil - In retrospect, having raced up and down those forty-six , I wished I'd done it your way. Sounds like you had the perfect culmination to your long running quest. Congratulations to a deserving 46r! jt

    Sheltered summits

You caught me, nartreb... South Baldhead's the one I meant to reference. This OLD head gets confused easily, often mixing up the various Baldheads and Baldfaces, not to mention the Baldpates east of Grafton Notch. You might say I was "all bald up" again this time. jt

    Sheltered summits

In Vermont: East Mountain, a 3k with 2k prominence north of Burke, has an array of abandoned buildings on top that could offer shelter. Gore Mt., another 3k with 2k prominence, further north, near the Canadian border, has an old firewarden's cabin right at the top. Right now it's sealed by five...

    Gore Mt., 3332'

Sunday, Feb. 24, 2008 Gorgeous day to get out in the woods - blue sky, decent temps, no wind, glittering snow. Snow in the Norheast Kingdom has a good crust underneath 3-4" newer light snow. The first third of Gore's trail was pockmarked by extensive postholing - courtesy of my cousins the...

The passing of a member of our hiking family.................

Neil - In your profession you cure your patients' pain. I wish there were some way we could cure yours. I can't imagine losing one of my kids... I can only imagine the depths of your pain in losing Dominic. May you and Sylvie find the strength to shore each other up in your time of great...

    Brand New VT Map Quiz!

Oops. While I was picking Monadnock, Steve Hiker beat me to it. So today's entry from me is Tillotson, the #7 peak.

    Add 'em up!

I climbed 627 mountains, 671 of them solo, in 58 states and 6 countries with a total vertical ascent of 212,613 metres... a sub-par year for me. My 2008 goal is to hit all the county high points of Delaware.

    Spruce Peak VT winter bushwack

Wow, that jar went downhill in a hurry. It was dry and easily opened three weeks ago. Bummer when you can't "get your reward" once you make it to the top.

Mt. Aeolus formerly the mountain known as Green

We discovered, after the fact, that you can drive (even a low-clearance vehicle) up the trail maybe a half mile to a point beyond the entrance to the old quarry. Just above, where the road/trail gets dicey, there's a nice campsite location with a fire ring. Glad you got your reward, Jen!
