    Felspar Slide

Neil, I was wondering if it was me, but if you say so, I guess it was. Haven't had my coffee yet:p The title of this thread is confusing. Don't know about the slide on the west side of Colden that EMM is referencing, but everyone on this thread is talking about the SE slide, aka the 1990 slide.

    Presi Traverse 6/22 or 6/23

Reasonable? We did it last year - starting at 5am and finishing around 7:30-8pm, I think. We had a varied group of hardy hikers ranging in age from the mid 20s to the mid 50s. We did the 'minimal' traverse (19.8 miles) north to south - exiting after Pierce. We spent an hour at the Madison...

    Presi Traverse 6/22 or 6/23

North to South A bunch of us from NY did the traverse last year on June 20th and we camped the night before at the Moose Brook State Park, 2 miles west of Gorham. It was convenient and had showers. We spotted cars the day before and were able to get a 5am start

New Insect repellents recommended by CDC

Picaridin Still waiting for someone to weigh in on Picaridin. I guess it's too new for any feedback here. It's only in Cutter Advanced, as far as I could find out. It's odorless and Cutter says it doesn't harm plastics or synthetics and the protction is comparable to DEET. Worth a try.

New Insect repellents recommended by CDC

picaridin Does anybody have experience with picaridin? The information I've seen says that it's protection is comparable to DEET. It's been used with success in Europe, Asia and Australia and was recently approved for use in the US. There is at least one product that has it - Cutter Advanced...

    The best news....

More This really is amazing. No longer 'presumed extinct'. I love seeing and hearing woodpeckers on the trails. Imagine seeing a woodpecker with a thirty inch wingspan! Last seen in 1944. The Times now has a story(registration required). Not that I'll ever see one in the wild, but it's...

    The best news....

Confirmed AP is reporting (front page on NY times website) that there have been 15 sightings in 7000 hours of search time and that there is a video - although not a link to it. They were able to positively ID the bird by magnifying and analyzing individual frames of the video. It's nice to...

    Adirondack Slide Climbing stories.

Eagle Slide The Eagle Slide is a wonderful slide climb - difficult but emminenently doable. Use climbing shoes. I'm no expert, but have climbed many slides. It is steep. And majestic. :) Have done it twice and wait for the next time.

    going solo

Just do it My first hike alone was early on in my hiking "career". I hiked Crane Mt. in the Southern ADKs. It was a bit unnerving - I checked my map every five minutes and got a bit spooked when I thought I lost the trail. But it was also exhilarating. I got hooked on solo hiking right away...

Drinking too much water on the trail?

Electrolyte drink Thanks for the link to the recipe. I missed it before. How is the taste? Do you add anything to make it more palatable - like lemon or another flavoring? I've been hooked on Emer'gen-C for use during hiking. It has 200mg potassium and 60 mg sodium for every packet, plus...

Drinking too much water on the trail?

Can you drink too much water while hiking? I feel I need to drink lots of water on a long day of hiking, because I sweat a lot and have always followed the conventional wisdom - drink, drink, drink! On a warm summer day I can drink water or Gatorade all day long and hardly ever feel the need...

    New twist to the 46.

Just amazing, Alain! Gee, I didn't realize that you started your first full moon hike without Pinpin. Does that count? :D I remember the night of June 20th. We were camping at South Meadow. You had told me that you would be hiking that night. We were going to meet to reunite you with...

    Presidential Range Trip

What a differencea day makes! Teloshykr- We did the Presi Traverse the day after - on Father's Day. It was cool and quite breezy by the time we got above treeline. The clouds were hanging low and there was lots of rime ice on Adams in the morning. The clouds began to lift and Mt. Washington...
