    Isolation Bushwhack on 3/12 Ms. Brown's #48

Yahoo! It really was a great day and a special thanks to all who were looking out for us, and I hope that everyone attemtping their last winter hike made their goal too. Special thanks to Wildpeaks (Tom), Juls (Julie, but will now be known as "Spruce Trap" ;) ), Magic, and of course Ghost...

    Isolation Bushwhack on 3/12 Ms. Brown's #48

Maybe we should go on a stealth mission and kidnap Ms. Brown so she can make it Saturday? The weather is looking good....might have to break out the shorts (OK, I won't subject you guys to that) ;) http://www.srh.noaa.gov/data/forecasts/NHZ006.php See you at Rocky Branch TH Saturday at 8! Bill

    Most Challenging Mountaineering Routes

Hey Jkrew81, I take it you liked that King Ravine trail we met on. :) If so, I'd make the same suggestion as SJ and go with the Flume Slide. It's tough enough during the summer months, so winter has got to be a serious challenge (wouldn't do it solo though). Haven't done the slide to...

    Reveille.

TCD, I tend to disagree. I dislike my suburban neighbors, so I fire up the snow blower/lawn mower nice and early on Sunday mornings. If they come over to complain, I start up the chainsaw too. ;) I would never be that inconsiderate of my fellow campers. :D

    synthetic sleeping bag

Hi Carolion, This is my first season with the SD but I did a lot of research and testing and think this is the right bag for me for the money. I have a tendency to not spend a lot of $$ on myself because I have 2 kids that think I'm a walking ATM, so I over-research and choose what I think will...

    synthetic sleeping bag

I just purchased a Sierra Designs Wild Bill (not quite as nice as the Cat's Meow, but suits my needs). I can't use a down bag either, so I'm always looking for synthetic, and the Polargard 3D appears to be the right stuff when it's wet...

    Isolation Bushwhack on 3/12 Ms. Brown's #48

Okay....enough! Let's get this done this Saturday! Rest all week to get ready for how ever long it may take, but let's do it. We can all write a book about our adventures with this hill when we get done!

    Isolation Bushwhack on 3/12 Ms. Brown's #48

I agree with Tom. The hiking will be fine and a foot of snow is better than the 3 we had to deal with before, it's the getting there and getting home that will be the most dangerous part. We'll have to stay in touch tonight to make a decision. Is everyone available Sunday just in case?

    Morning coffee.

If the French Press is a Bodum, then there are pro's and con's. The "press" is an aluminum screen...you let the grinds soak in boiling water then press them to the bottom. However the screen is course and too many grinds come through it. Yuck. On the pro side, the pot can be used as the mug (but...

    Isolation Bushwhack on 3/12 Ms. Brown's #48

With all the snow that fell down my back on the last bushwhack, I've decided NOT to buy a neck gaitor and to just bring a chainsaw (this way Tom won't go home again all scratched up either!) Of course some of that could have been from Dave throwing snowballs at the back of my head too :D , but...

    Affordable yet good quality crampons??

I agree with Kurcam. I like the steel vs aluminum because I prefer durability over weight. BD contact 10 points or Grivels G-10's are very comprable to each other and will run around 80-100.

    Lanterns and stoves ?

Generally I use a mantle latern for car camping (a good old fashioned Coleman). But for hiking, I use a Princeton Tec 2 headlamp. Lighter weight and more efficient. Plus it's easier to carry a couple of double A batteries than it is to carry fuel, and the lantern takes up too much space and...

winter peak bagging with non insulated boots

Have you considered "Superfeet" or some other type of insole to help you for now? You might also look at Thorlo 3's in addition to wearing polypro socks (and warmers).

    Isolation Bushwhack on 3/12 Ms. Brown's #48

I'm bringing a snowblower just to make sure we make it this time. ;) Can't wait to break my new Tubbs in, and I like the idea of trying the traditional bushwhack. Hopefully we'll be able to follow the trail the AMC broke last week, if it's still there.

You know might be addicted to hiking...

You have problems waking up to go to work everyday, but you are up before the Saturday 4 AM alarm even goes off.

    crampon bag?

Here's one I found at REI http://www.rei.com/online/store/ProductDisplay?storeId=8000&catalogId=40000008000&productId=47843285&parent_category_rn=40003626&vcat=REI_SEARCH Doesn't look too bad for $15 but I haven't checked it out.

I humbly apologize. I created this thread so everyone might find a new recipe to try while in da woods, not just me. ;) Bring on the octupus recipes, I'm sure Ripple will appreciate it too!

    Dinner Time!!!!!

Hi everyone, Slow day at work, so I figure I'd start a thread and get some opinions on something we all like....FOOD! I've been down the freeze dried route and tried all the brands etc. I was wondering if anyone have any decent dinner time backcountry suggestions that aren't posted in...
