    re Saddleback, Basin and Haystack

Hmm Moose "put ones hands in front of ones feet and the hiker will be fine" That does not work downclimbing Saddleback ! :)

    re Saddleback, Basin and Haystack

Hmmm I would not go down Saddleback in any conditions. Climbing up is one thing but downclimbing is another. It is a real scramble after all. And with a chance of rain, well, I would think twice. Am I too cautious ? Maybe. Geez, how will I lead NEI 4+ again this winter ?

    Washing a backpack ???

Rub a dub in the tub. I always wash my packs (small or expedition) in the tub with regular (powder) laundry detergent. The main thing is to "bounce" the padding part on the the floor many times to pump water in and out of the mesh fabric. Rinse in 2 distinct batches of water. Woolite ? I think...

    Machu Picchu?

Spice it up Yes I have and I highly recommend doing the Inca trail back to back with the Salkantay trek, which takes you over a high mountain pass (4 800 m). You can see pics here , although the text in is French. I highly recommend Peru Agency (deal with Vilma preferably) to arrange for the...

Leave 2 things in plain sight on the back seat : 3 crushed empty King Cans of beer and a couple of empty gun shells. It'l make them think : boy, what if he comes out of the woods now : we're in deep ****!".

    Official Presi Traverse?

Imho You shoud hit Clay and Franklin since they are part of the Presidenatial Range but drop Jackson & Webster since there two no longer sit on the range but are part of the Presidential flats. That's how it feels as you traverse over from Mitzpah. If you ever make it over to Webster, you...

My Better Half and Lowes Path???

Hmmm, allow me to disagree IMHO, a round trip to Adams as a day hike is more tiring than the OBP to FW hike. Not harder technically, but significantly more strenous when you take into account the vertical drop that she will have to deal with. I know many folks that have done the OBP-FW easily...

    Why Do You Hike?

Low impact ? Excuse me for disagreeing, but hiking. for most of us who drive +/- 2 hours to get to a trail head, is far from low impact, because we pollute the atmosphere. Cycling is much better (but I don't cycle). When I bagged my 100 NEHH in just over 3 years, I had the nasty feeling that...
