    Huntington Ravine Floor

Mo is right but if you stick, like you said, to the floor of the ravine (say, the area around the huge boulders at the bottom, below the fan), I doubt that falling ice can reach you. There is probably some ice left in Pinacle gully but that is probably it.

    Huntington Ravine Floor

Yes There is probably very little snow left there, if any. I last climbed in Huntington on April 16 and the snow was fading fast. Look here to get the picture of what it was like 1 month ago.

    Little effort, great reward hikes

The obvious is often overlooked : Mt Major in NH is as good a little hike as you can get. Funny that a "non local" has to bring it up ... :p

    Deadly peakbagging

Risks Jason, allow me to disagree. According to this winter's statistics, winter hiking in New England is way more dangerous than ice climbing.

    Hunter Mountain

Hmmm According to http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=42.17778&lon=-74.23083 , I am glad I walked all the way to the new tower last summer !

    Deadly peakbagging

My 2 soles "s'est tué" can best be translated as "killed himself". The reason is in the "s'", which points to the subject, the self. If it would have been written "est mort", then died would have been the correct translation. In any case, it does not make any difference as to the end status.

    Mud Season Ethics

Mud season = motorcycle riding for me. Looooooong rides like the one I took Friday : 330 miles in the Whites including a Kanc traverse ! It is good to be lazy after a season of training and climbing. I give the high peaks the break they (and I!) deserve.

    disagreement is good

Jim Read some Thoreau, Waterman (Backwoods ethics, etc.), etc. You will find out that many treat the summits like the interior of a cathedral. You don't see people use their cell phones in a church, do you ? Even tourists that are only visiting and could'n care less about religion respect that...

Advice Wanted: Pocket Rocket Cannister Stove

Sly and the family Stone I own both a Pocket Rocket and a Superfly. I only use the later nowadays. The former is indeed tippy and is best used with the MSR pots that are grooved underneath (Bakelite?). As for the Superfly, it fits al canisters and that is a real plus when traveling a broad.

Cards Audrey, I just upgraded to a Canon Elph S500 this week. I previously owned a 2 and later a 3.2 MPix Canon before that one. I have used them on long trips. You will love your Olympus I'm sure. I carry 3 batteries when I leave for a 2+ week trip. I also carry the battery charger. I now...

Tucks trail conditions to floor of ravine

Friday the conditions were hard packed snow in the morning with some icy patches that were very slick. Be esp. careful in the shady spots : stick to the sides. Coming down at six p.m., the same conditions prevailed.

    Dog Etiquette on the trails

To Grumpy, Kevin and Audrey Grumpy, you took 7 posts, prior to your last one, to state your opinion. Please allow me to state mine, like it or not. And we can't take Red's post off the table because it is still in play. He is the one that brought this up and I think that there is matter for...

    Dog Etiquette on the trails

Breaking the silence I have to jump in. Why is it always the dog's right that comes first ? In Sherbrooke, we have had many small children over the years savagely attacked by dogs that were such good dogs. Heck, there was one just last week. We see that on TV too often : huge bite marks in the...
