    Redfield and gastroenteritis.

Another aspect of the trip was the complete failure of two pairs of brand spanking new MSR denali ascents. One pair(on a 160 lb guy) broke before we even hit flowed lands from upper works. Mine broke on the descent of Redfield. I just took them back and traded in for Atlas 1025's. I plan on...

    Tabletop in Winter

Pin Pin--When will you be heading in for Cliff from livingston pond? Many vftter's are waiting for the report! I think many folks here are waiting to hear when the trails are broken out.

Adirondack hike - Wednesday, December 29th

I'd be in 100%, but I'm already going to be at uphill lean-to hiking gray, cliff and redfield. I might try to add skylight also. I've got 40 left too...

    Pitchoff, Sunday Dec. 12

We try to not use the word "die" in any way when kayaking in December :) ...it's really not that bad though. It's a class 2-3 river, and we all wear drysuits. I like to get on the water once every month(more in warmer weather).

    The East v. The West

I lived in Boulder co for a year. I moved back to NY for business reasons. I miss the front range area, and the skiing.I'll probably be back out there within two years. I'd like to finish the NE 115 and my winter 46 though before then.

    Pitchoff, Sunday Dec. 12

I'm out--going kayaking on the salmon river in Pulaski NY. It might be the last day of the season so I need to get it in. Have fun!!

    Pitchoff, Sunday Dec. 12

If I'm not kayaking that day, I may be there. If you see a guy with a beard near a little blue subaru, that means I'm in. I haven't done pitchoff yet, and I hear it's a great hike.

    Sledding down the Daks

My friends that don't ski brought cheap plastic rool up sleds up big slide. We skied, they used the sleds on the trail. They had a blast.

    skiing whiteface

I haven't learned to drop the knee yet teleskier--I lock 'em down for the descents. I like the added security when your looking down at the birch glades on big slide. It might be overkill, but it's very intuitive for anyone with a lift serve background. With that being said, pretty much every...

Car Blocked in By Trees No Help from Loj

I was in the Sewards this weekend, and there was tons of blowdown on the access road. By the time I drove out sunday, all of the hunters using the area had cleared the road up nicely. Saturday night and Sunday morning saw a significant wind event where we were, and there is tons of new blowdown...

    Seward trailhead parking this weekend

I just got back from the trip. Great time. I met the ranger for the area, and she is super friendly, although she is quite certain that there is only 1 plane wreck on seward(if anyone can call her about the second one she would appreciate it, as she is in charge of that type of thing). The...

    Seward trailhead parking this weekend

I did call the dec in ray brook, and they told me to call the local ranger. I did, but she was out in the field. The gate is open as of now. She knows we will be in there( I left her a message), and I hope to drive the road if weather permits.

    Seward trailhead parking this weekend

I'll just call the ray brook office and see what they have to say. I've done the road in winter, it's not that bad on skis. Winter in the sewards is a great time...

    Seward trailhead parking this weekend

I will be hiking the Sewards this weekend, and the gate to the summer parking is open as of right now. Snow is in the forecast. This is for anyone local to the area. If it were to snow while I am in there, would they leave the gate open so I can get my car out, or would it be locked in until I...

    Corey's Rd. Gate

Alg and I were walking out on the road when the first cars of the season started passing us. Not a very good feeling.

    Drinking water from snow question

I got the idea from the book How to s**t in the woods. It's a comical look at camping and sh**tting, but it has a serious side, and they mention that the cysts have been found in snow. I thought it was nuts too, I am just wondering what any one persons experience has been. I have never worried...

    Drinking water from snow question

I have read that snow can contain giardia, and you should melt, then boil it for 3-5 minutes to kill any protozoans that may be present. In the past, I have just melted the snow, and drank it without any problems. Now that I plan on finishing some winter tick lists, I have been thinking about...
