    buck mtn & snakes

I haven't heard much about rattlers on Buck, but I would suggest you avoid Tongue mountain. It's supposed to have a lot of rattlers.

    Motivation

The same with me. I usually gear my workouts at home to accommodate my hiking. While I enjoy the exercise I get while hiking, I really head towards the woods because I love the outdoors.

    Another Bear Story

Sounds like the kid didn't realize how serious it was to have food. Sorry to hear the old 'smell of food' problem come up again. But then, with brown bears, we ARE food. I'm still glad to hear the kid made it through but sorry the confrontation killed the bear.

    Another Bear Story

MSN's website told a story of a kid that fought with a brown bear and lived to tell. If you want to read the story, the following link should work: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4840163/

    Head lamp reccomendation sought

I like hiking at night. My favorite headlamp is the Black Diamond Gemini. It's a hybrid lamp with dual LEDs and an incandescent light. You can switch back and forth. I find there's no definite type of light that's better for solo night hikes - it all depends on the hiking conditions at the...

    while hiking

I agree completely with Grumpy and others who emphasize that the victim is not at fault. I expect this kind of stuff in the Catskills because I saw enough when I was growing up in the area, but the ADK's?! All I know is that I don't recall ever thinking about carrying money while hiking...

What is your favorite season to hike in?

Summer for me. I don't mind heat so as long as the bugs aren't too bad, it is by far, the most comfortable. Fall has its own beauty for sure, but I love the really long days and the warmer temperatures of summertime.

    Favorite New York Mountain

Thanks for the suggestion Doc. I'll keep Pilot Knob in mind. Buck Mt. can get real busy on a summer weekend or holiday.

    Favorite New York Mountain

That's the best response I've seen so far Oldsmores! It seems to me that picking your favorite mountain is like what they say about picking a favorite child - you can't. They're all different and unique in their own ways. They all have their individual personalities and each has its positives...

    first catskill hike

I agree with the people that suggested Overlook. It's almost always my first choice when I bring a 'newbie' out for their first hike. It's a very short drive from Woodstock, has a relatively easy trail but does require some elevation gain, and has good views and fun things to look at like the...

    Dog Etiquette on the trails

I love dogs and everytime I see one on the trail, I'm always happy to greet a new furry friend. Still, I think that anytime you are in public with a dog, you should leash it. If nothing else, it's just courtesy to other people. Even when you feel your dog is under your control, you never know...

    Black Fly Update

Mink, Thanks for the update. Hope we get regular updates on the blackflies as the warmer seasons approach. Grumpy, I clicked on your link and now I'm scratching my head and neck just at the thought and trying to remember what I did with the netting headpiece I bought last year.

    Mud Season Ethics

I tend to stay off the trails when they're muddy (I answered 'b'). I know myself enough to know that no matter what my good intentions are, I tend to 'step off' the path when I think my boots will get drenched in 6 inches of mud - and I rationalize that it's not as bad as most others because I...

    Confirmed Gray Wolf in Adirondacks

I'm glad to hear the story. I'm confused about something though - aren't there any controls on shooting coyote like we have for deer and bear? It seems like this guy shoots whatever he wants. Also, speaking of grey - I had asked this in a previous thread but I guess I wasn't clear - I have...

Sad News - The passing of Grace

How sad to hear that she passed away. I met her a few years ago and she was a joy to talk to. She had a full and wonderful life and inspired many.

Today's NY Times Adirondack Cougar Article

Sounds like an awesome sighting Doc McPeak. Sorry to hear about the beavers. What reason did they give for killing them? I think the controversy about cougars in our state will continue until we see them more regularly. But either way, for those who don't want deer eating everything in their...

Winter Jacket: How Much is Enough?

Hi Periwinkle, I think what you need depends on a lot of things - where you'll be hiking (how exposed to the wind, how wet the trail is, etc.), the weather conditions for that day, and your own comfort levels. Like Warren, I don't think the outer shell is as crucial as might be expected and I...

    Remove blood from G-Tex?

You're welcome, DeadFred. Hope it helps. Don't be afraid to put some of the techwash directly on the stain when you try scrubbing it out. Just so that you know, Techwash also has a product where you can renew the waterproof/breathability of fabrics like Gore-Tex. I've never used it before...

    Tragic News in NH

Dave, Thank you for sharing. It really is a sad turn of events that ended so tragically. I’m so sorry about your loss – both personally and professionally. I had a childhood friend who died in an accident when he was twenty-one. I ran the what-ifs through my mind and felt bad about the...
