dealing with stray light from behind the subject

I do not propose adding catchlights to subjects' eyes artificially (via processing tricks), either with human or animal subjects. But I do observe that catchlights created by the lighting in a scene do "animate" both human and animal subjects -- makes them look more alive. As a hunter, I have...

dealing with stray light from behind the subject

I'll agree with most of what ALGonquin Bob says here, but we part company on the matter of exposure being less important with RAW capture than it once was. Yes, it is possible to "salvage" OK images from mis-exposed RAW "captures," but only within limits that I find similar to those of the film...

dealing with stray light from behind the subject

My monitor reveals (to me) very little difference between the original provided by forestgnome and the reworked version provided by w7xman. To me, the original handled the relatively great dynamic range (of brightness values) in the scene very well, considering that the capability of the camera...

dealing with stray light from behind the subject

This is a fine moose picture, indeed. The light and lighting are, simply, wonderful. The rim lighting, as Mark S has observed, helps separate the subject (moose) from its surroundings. Imagine what would happen without those delightful highlights on the antlers, the subtler bright outline...

A sweet tribute to your pet on a very sad occasion for you. Please accept my condolences. G.

    Please Critique

I second Mark's comments. The trillium is nice, and could be strengthened by cropping, as noted. There is more that bothers me about the mountain view than the out-of-focus branch in the foreground. I have a problem with the whole tangle of branches in the foreground, which here serve less...

Morning at the Lupine Fest in Sugar Hill...

Beautiful, and sensitively done. Even in the digital era we see that photography done well really is, "writing with light." G.

    Rainbow on Cedar Lakes

Beautiful scene, beautiful rainbow, and nice job stitching together the panoramic view. One thing you might want to try, if you have the software, is to darken the photo just a bit, while increasing its contrast to boost the intensity of the rainbow. The following web page provides a great...

    Adarondacks From Watertown NY

Hey, Scoutmaster. After your trip, please let us know what you did hiking-wise as a diversion from the road trip between Syracuse and Canada. G.

    Shooting Waterfalls

Excellent primer on photographing waterfalls, Mark S! It is one of those "print out and save" posts. G.

    Shooting Waterfalls

Nicely done photo. I don't think there are any "rules" for shooting waterfalls. I'd suggest trying different techniques/approaches, to see what you like. Today's preference seems to be for shots in which the falling water is motion-blurred to one degree or another by using slower shutter...

    Adarondacks From Watertown NY

I might recommend a side trip to the Chaumont Barrens Preserve, near Watertown. This is not a long hike, and it isn’t in the mountains, but it is an interesting landscape, with interesting geology. And it is not far off your route from Syracuse to Canada. A lot more information is here...

    Camera buying advice

Yo, Mohammed! After all the peripheral chatter here, I want to thank you for opening the "what to buy?" discussion. I managed to get some information I wanted. And, I wonder (a) what your decision is, and (b) whether this thread was helpful in reaching that decision. Will you give us an...

    Camera buying advice

I have to agree that the proprietary battery pack is a drawback on the Canon G10. However, my experience with rechargeable batteries in the past 3-4 years, the G10's battery (NB7L) specs and reports regarding the G10's battery working capacity (approx 400 shots per charge) lead me to conclude...

    Camera buying advice

One more buying point (for me) on the Canon G10 is that Really Right stuff makes an “L” plate for the G10, for attaching the camera to a quick release clamp on a ballhead, tripod or monopod. http://reallyrightstuff.com/rrs/Itemdesc.asp?ic=BG10%2DL&eq=&Tp= Pricey, yes! But my tripod and...

    Camera buying advice

One more question about the Canon G10. Does the image review feature include an option that shows image histograms? G. (Apologies to Mohammed for creating drift or hijacking this thread. But I think it does bear on "camera buying advice.")

We had to put Genie down today

I grieve with you, having had to say good-bye to my own four-legged hiking companion of 14 years at the end of October last year. May Genie have a wonderful romp in Doggie Heaven, and may you find comfort in knowing she surely is there. G.

    Camera buying advice

Perhaps the question I need to ask is how long does it take the G10 to achieve focus. (Shooting withy my Nikon D2Hs, I almost always use "continuous" -- AF-C --focus that allows the shutter to fire even if accurate focus has not been achieved. I don't care for the AF-S setting that delays...
