    Another accident in Platte Clove...

As a matter of curiosity, and definitely not to be argumentative, I wonder what is "sufficient" footwear. (For the record, here, I am very inclined to agree that flip-flops are not appropriate backcountry footwear, except for casual lounging around in camp or perhaps (but only perhaps) while...

    "Bridge" camera purchase advice sought

I cut my digital teeth on full-size Nikon professional DSLRs, which are (to understate the case considerably) big and heavy, especially when fitted with premium quality zoom lenses and flash units. The growing desire for something smaller as a casual “walkaround” or hiking camera finally...

Do you keep your gun loaded when you hike?

Wow! That NinjaBear is something else. Do you suppose it has close relatives that work the Marcy Dam-Lake Colden-Flowed Lands circuit in the Adirondacks? G.

Do you keep your gun loaded when you hike?

If you carry a firearm for self defense, common sense dictates that it must be loaded. If the moment comes when you actually need to shoot, you must be ready to do so without any fumbling around. G.

    The meaning of Memorial Day

Much of my childhood was spent in the small town of Northfield, Vermont, a community that boasts a strong patriotic and military tradition. When Memorial Day comes each year I reflect on the park and swimming pool the townspeople joined forces to build after World War II. A simple granite...

Bear euthanized after biting photo taking hiker

The American Bear Association says: Male black bears ordinarily will range in size (weight) from 125 to over 600 lbs, with typical weight of about 250 lbs. The world record weight is 880 lbs, a male bear 10.75 years old shot in North Carolina in late 1998. Male bears in Pennsylvania commonly...

Bear euthanized after biting photo taking hiker

A sign of deer overpopulation ... I have read that there are many times the number of whitetailed deer in their range today than when the Pilgrims landed in MA, 1620. G.

Bear euthanized after biting photo taking hiker

Sketchy story followed by all kinds of internet outrage and speculation. Ridiculous. Too bad the incident happened. I agree there should be rabies screening in a post mortem on the bear and the victim should undergo rabies treatment, as a precaution, if so advised by a competent physician...

    Terms of use

One option might be to license “one time use only” for the specific publication in question. This means what it says, and you retain all other use rights to license as you see fit. In this kind of deal you may be asked for “first publication” rights, meaning the photo has not been published...

Moose River Plains closed to vehicles

My first sashay into and through the Moose River Plains tract was nearly 40 years ago, just about this time of year and before the seasonal roads were opened to vehicle traffic. A partner and I hiked the road from Limekiln Lake to the Moose River South Branch crossing, where we set up a base...

Ken Cuddeback Trail in Amherst closed due to coyote attacks

Actually, what we know today as the eastern coyote probably did not exist 100 years ago or before that. What we are looking at is an invasive, rather than native species, apparently. So to suggest humans are encroaching on coyote territory in the Northeast is quite in error. In fact, it...

What is up with this picture??

Any dirt or crud on a digital sensor that I have experienced (plenty, by the way) has manifested itself in images as a dark spot, rather than a light spot. Same applies to any junk that has landed on internal surfaces in my lenses. So I am inclined to discount the salt rime on the sensor...

    A few questions:

Nikon's 70-200mm f/2.8 zoom lens weighs in at 51.9 oz -- 3.3 lb. It extends approximately 8 in. from the camera body, without a lens hood attached. It is, in short, something of a beast. While this lens does come equipped with its own tripod collar and mounting foot -- so the lens can be...

You never know who might be on the trail

What a wonderful story, and experience for this hiking lady! I've tramped around on trails for 55 years and have met many interesting people along the way, but never a U.S. president. G.

Camera is draining batteries, even when off

If your camera runs on AA batteries, why not try a set of non-rechargeable cells to see what happens? If it is the camera draining the batteries, it will flatten the non-rechargeable set quickly, just like what is happening to the rechargeables. If it doesn't, then look at the batteries. G.

Camera is draining batteries, even when off

I'd look first at my (rechargeable) batteries. They do wear out eventually. The rapid discharge syndrome and inability to hold a charge you describe is exactly how camera battery packs that I've used have tended to behave at the end of their usable lives. G.
