When they invent self-chilling beer, I will try that!

    Major Noreaster Coming!!

Encased In Reading, MA We got light snow in Reading, MA all Wednesday morning. The temperature started out around 20. There was around 4-5 inches of accumulated snow by 3:00. I watched the temperature climb from 24 to 30 degrees in a matter of only 30 minutes and I knew what was coming. I went...

    Thoughts on winter food storage...

Ursacks are great for winter camping. Fill them up and tie them to a tree or stump to keep them from being carried off by a raccoon. They won't stop a bear, but will work fine for winter critters.

    REI discounts

I got the EMS coupon also, but it excludes Merrell products. All of their storewide coupons always explicitly exclude Merrell products. Anyone know why?

    Western NY Snow Storm

I am originally from a suburb of Buffalo and still have lots of family there. I have talked to them on the phone and they have all been without power since Thursday night. Even as late as Thursday afternoon, the storm was supposed to drop only 3 to 6 inches of snow on the area. My Mom ended up...

    ...when the lighting strikes...

Lightning Doesn't Always Follow the Rules Getting away from the highest point of land is good advice, but it doesn't necessarily mean you are safe. I have witnessed lightning hit the Charles River not far from lots of tall skyscrapers. I also saw a video of lightning striking the ground right...

    Everyone was legal

I also saw a ranger checking for passes at the same trailhead a few weeks ago.

    Leaving Your gear in camp

On our way into hike Dix from the Elk Lake parking lot, we read in the trail register that a group lost a bunch of gear to thieves. They were staying in the lean to down the trail. A camp or lean to close to the trail head might be the only situation where I would be concerned about my gear...

    What lightweight tarp to buy?

According to the web site for Tyvek, water vapor will pass through both ways: Can DuPont™ Tyvek® be used with the lettering facing in? DuPont™ Tyvek® HomeWrap®, DuPont™ Tyvek® StuccoWrap®, DuPont™ Tyvek® DrainWrap™ and DuPont™ Tyvek® CommercialWrap® are equally effective in both directions.

    What lightweight tarp to buy?

If you are looking for an inexpensive solution, get a big sheet of Tyvek. Sometimes, you can find a builder who will give you the end of a roll for free. Run it through your washing machine without soap before you use it to soften it up. You can buy a gromet kit at a crafts store or just wrap a...

Trekking poles, use or use not?

I use them all the time. I almost had to give up hiking because of knee problems, but using poles, especially on the descent cleared up the knee problems. I usually don't use the straps. I agree that they are great for lowering yourself down off rocks where you would normally have to do a little...

    Hanging your food

One of the risks with a bear bag is that bears are not the only bandits. I put up a bear bag while camping in the 'daks once that I was sure no bear could get. Sure enough, no bear got it, but in the morning I woke to a real mess after a red squirrel had ripped my bag apart. He either jumped...

    Hiking in the Nude

Never did it myself. Can't imagine I ever will. Being a northeast hiker, the thought of all those bugs and all that exposed skin doesn't sit well with me. Being a winter hiker doesn't really help. I did have the unfortunate experience of coming across a nude hiker - well, a sunbather really...

    Mt Washington summit crowds

The only time I've been up to the Washington summit, I was surrounded by a "crowd" of 3 other people. OK, it was a 4 degree day in February and one of the other people was my hiking partner. If I hiked Washington during tourist season, I don't think the summit crowds would bother me. I'd...
