    Beer Trail

I thought the title of this thread was a lure purely intended to get us to open it. (I'll click on any post containing "beer" and "trail"!) Who'd have thunk it was actually about a beer trail. They can get local businesses to sponser the outhouses they will have to drop every quarter mile along...

Any tips for asthma (exercise-induced )while hiking

I occasionally get mild asthma from winter hiking. A puff from an Albuterol inhaler always takes care of it. One warning: if you are hiking in cold weather, keep your inhaler warm. Carry it in a pocket inside your jacket. When very cold, the propellant in the inhaler doesn't work very well and...

    resole in reading?

John, I haven't forgotton about getting this information for you. I tried to look up the guy in the yellow pages, but couldn't find him. I finally had time to drive by where his shop was in Reading, and it looks like he's gone. I think the business name was Bernard's Shoe Repair, so if anyone...

    resole boots?

I had my 25-yr old boots resoled by a guy in Reading (a little closer than Seattle). It was around $50 for Vibram soles a few years back. PM me if you are interested and I'll look up his name.

New Eastern High Peaks Bear Canister Rule

From the wording of the text, it sounds like homemade canisters would not be accepted. When I looked into making my own canister a few years ago, I gave up on the idea. I couldn't make one cheaper and lighter than the commercial models.

Does anyone know where this is?

I guess I'd do it in a heartbeat too. I'd take one step and my heart would stop beating!

    Happy B-day!!!

Hb Sk! Happy Birthday, SK! Although I have only had the pleasure of hiking with you a few times (so far), they've always been fun trips. About the only thing I can hold against you is introducing me to JohnL which lead to employment which severely cut into my hiking time! ;) P.S. Now that...

    GPS/Mapping Tool.

UTM Grids I tried making my own grid overlays for my AMC trail guide maps. One problem I found was that it was difficult to create a grid that I could use on all my maps since the horizontal scale (east-west) varies slightly from map to map (and even on the same map) due to the convergence of...

    GPS mileage versus actual

We might be talking about two different things here, but my comment about tracking errors add to the total distance reported by the GPS came from closer examination of the track points recorded by my GPS. The tracking errors made it appear that I sometimes zig-zagged down the trail instead of...

    GPS mileage versus actual

As they say, something doesn't add up. Let me see if I have the facts. When you set up the waypoints in your Topo programs, you created a route. The total round distance of this route was reported to be 7.1 miles. You downloaded these waypoints into your GPS and hiked the route. When done, the...

    Bear proof cannister

Another reason not to hang your canister (other than it being unnecessary work) is that if a bear does get it down, it may give the bear something to hold onto to carry it off. Avoid stashing your canister where it could get knocked around and roll down hill, off a cliff or into a stream.

    REI Members?

Why do you think membership a scam? It's a one-time fee and not all that expensive at $15. (Compare with something like BJs which has an annual membership of $40.) The 20% coupon you get with your annual dividend can make up for that quickly. The only time I have ever seen any sales person...

    gorp/trail mix?

Gorp Bottle I use a 1/2 liter Nalgene bottle for my gorp. It lives in a small pouch on my pack belt. In the winter, it's handy to be able to grab a quick mouthful of gorp without taking off your gloves or digging through your pack. If I am using any sticky gorp ingredients (raisins, dried...

    gorp/trail mix?

A little of this. A little of that. Whatever's in the pantry. My mix is never the same twice. Care should be exercised for your winter mixes to make sure the stuff is still edible when hard frozen. The few Nestle morsels I threw in my trail mix for a March hike up Washington were like chewing...

    going solo

I've done around 10 solo day hikes in the Whites over the past few years. While I have some attraction to hiking solo, I'd rather hike with others given the choice. I don't think that you need to completely avoid all human contact to get the experience of solo hiking. If you are hesitant about...

    Cog Railway silent

I hiked up to Washington on March 18 up the Ammo trail and expected to be side by side with the Cog the whole way. However, other than seeing it right at the start in the Cog lot, we never heard or saw it until we got up above tree line when it was stopped at the Waumbek tank. The Ammo trail...
