Any web resources for navigation and/or bushwhacking?

One of the best on-line basic M&C tests. Great for folks just getting their off-trail nav chops. https://scoutingmagazine.org/2014/02/quiz-well-know-use-map-compass/

Peak Bragging 2021 - Let's hear what you did!

Nothing to brag about. Zero NE peaks over two consecutive years due to COVID border closure, breaking my 40 year streak.

Winter Hiking Season over before it started.

Peakbagger, So sorry to hear about this! Hang in there, stay positive! Fell off Chocorua in 2019 (standing, enjoying a view) and did a real number on myself. First Memorial then a Dartmouth-Hitchcock transfer at 2 A.M. for surgeries. Have faith in KNOWING you will HEAL. You'll be back...

    Bootleg sign?

Since you have the very latest info, and are certain this sign is directing hikers into woods causing herd path formation, I'm pretty sure the Waterville Valley association would want to know of this. Here's their email: [email protected]. Let us know what you find out; you'd be doing your...

    Bootleg sign?

Go to http://mountainwandering.blogspot.com/2020/ and scroll down just over half way to the first of Steve's two yellow sign photos, taken from a different angle to JoshandBaron's. The sign appears not to have been moved. As you can see it is, in my view, perfectly positioned adjacent to the...

    Bootleg sign?

I think it's the real deal. The shape, yellow color and black print is consistent with those posted by the WVAIA, it's been there since at least 2019 and a famous White Mountain blogger refers to it as a "favorite trail sign".

    Knee Sleeve / Support Help

While a torn meniscus was healing 15 years ago, wore a short neoprene knee sleeve with open patella, no metal/plastic parts, over two years of hiking. (Neoprene is good if you want to warm the joint). Did the job.

    52 with no View

Hi B the H, Great initiative! Can't contribute right now, but please remove The Horn. There 3 years ago, beautiful open views abound to the south abound. Check out hillmap.com or your favorite sat images to confirm. Thanks!

    Engine Hill Bushwack?

Thanks J&B and Peakbagger re bushwhacking issue in the Whites. Looks like the Forest Service has invoked that rule out of an abundance of liability caution rather than for ecological integrity concerns. I think there's agreement that frequent "bushwhacking" in large numbers taking the same...

    Engine Hill Bushwack?

Peakbagger, you state " AMC groups used to consistently use it but given the new rule that AMC cant bushwhack in wilderness areas they will not be doing so." but can't find this rule through Google. Please provide a URL. Thanks.

    Historic USFS WMNF Maps

Have never seen this before - just clicking on the link does nothing. But if I right click on it and open a separate tab, a pop-up shows offering to download the zip file, which was successful. Thanks a ton for maps - really useful!

    Is this Ammo Slide New?

The link shows three pics of the slide vicinity - 2013, first half 2017 and 2018. The blurry 2017 pic shows what might be a small slide, just a speck, in our area of interest. Maybe this particular slide had its origins in the 2010 activity Skiguy points out...

    Is this Ammo Slide New?

Get's more interesting. Two Google earth low res images [URL="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1N07LYcfSnOfakVYlgGkT65jBqcZBUtoE/view"], top from 2017, bottom from 2018. As you can see no sign of the slide in the 2017 image. In the 2018 photo there's the slide with a bigger new one in Burt...

    Is this Ammo Slide New?

This slide shows on a winter image on Fatmap, at about 4K feet just south of the Cog, so it's not recent. https://fatmap.com/adventures/@44.2704218,-71.3208757,501.1996137,-88.3092055,0,1257.4055633,normal

    North Moat Loop Direction

Having hiked that loop once and traversed the Moats several times, my vote is to climb North Moat first then descend Red Ridge. Its extended open terrain affords continuous views in the direction you're travelling.

    Interesting Stream 'Crossing'

Regarding the 1800' bump and tide, my attempt at humour. Clearly that closed contour is an error. As mentioned this area is wetlands as indicated on the USGS topos. If this contour was depicting a true depression hash marks perpendicular to the contour would line its interior. And the USGS...
