    Trail Work Tools

Anybody know where to get tools for trail work? I've found stuff online, but I would rather buy locally if it's possible. I live near Hanover NH, so I'm looking for something nearby, or at least within a reasonable radius.

Any studies on which bug dope works best with Black Flies?

Black flies really help me get into shape during the early summer hiking season. They're great motivators :)

    Pants for Trail Maintenance

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll go with the Carhartts. Puck, see you there! I'm heading up tomorrow morning. I'll look for your bright red plumage ;)

    Pants for Trail Maintenance

Any recommendations for pants to wear while doing trail work? I have a pair of Carhartts that I wear for yardwork, etc., but they're cotton. I'm attending the basic trail maintenance skills session tomorrow at Pinkham, and the forecast is calling for rain. Those Carhartts get very heavy and...

    Trail Work

I didn't see this in arm's links, so thought I'd mention it. There is an AMC basic trail maintenance skills session on Saturday at Pinkham Notch. I believe it's free for trail adopters, $30 otherwise. It looks like it hasn't filled up yet, or they just haven't updated the website. (link)

    Insect Repellents..."DEET vs. The World"

Great info NH_Mtn_Hiker!! I hadn't heard of picaridin, and after reading your posts I decided to try it. So last night I went to pick up some Cutter Advanced (the stuff with picaridin). The warning on the back says not to apply it to your face, and only "sparingly" around the ears. Is there...

    A Walk in Lebanon 3-31

Grouseking- If you're looking for a new place to explore in the area when going on a bigger hike isn't an option, there is a nice network of trails in the woods between Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and Sachem Village (Dartmouth grad student housing). Link to Google Map of the Area...

    New thread on winter boots

rentals If you want to try before you buy, the Dartmouth Outing Club rents gear (including mountaineering boots) at Occum Pond in Hanover, and I think someone else mentioned EMS rents them too.

Lost Hiker on Mt Lafayette - FOUND!

One of the news sources (Nashua Telegraph, I think), said his boots were frozen solid. Plus, he didn't even know what side of the mountain he was on. Probably best that he stayed put. Edit: What dug said ;)

    etrex cable

Looks like Ebay has them (thanks Rivet). They're going for less than Garmin charges, but the Ebay sellers are all overcharging for shipping/handling (I guess everybody has to make a buck), so it ends up not being much of a bargain. After some Googling, it looks like the cable interface is...

    etrex cable

I recently bought a Garmin Etrex, and I'm looking for a cable to connect with my pc. Garmin sells one, but it is a bit overpriced for a simple cable. I checked Bestbuy, Radioshack, and Newegg, and there doesn't seem to be a non-Garmin cable available. Did Garmin design some sort of funky...

Plastic boot shinbang - best avoidance measures?

I used to get the same thing from my ski boots. It was partly due to impact, but also seemed to be due to friction. One thing that helped was a trick my coach showed me: spray a little bit of cooking oil (like "Pam") into a Ziploc sandwich bag (spray it in, then squeeze all the air out of the...

    Uninsulated Mitten Shells ?

I second that. My Ragged Mountain shells are great . . . had them for more than 5 years and they are still like new.
