I haven't been up Pack this week as I on a training course. I expect the road is icy with all the warm weather. Microspikes are probably a good idea.

What an incredible day to end my Winter hiking season. Not a cloud, warm (almost too warm), and no real wind. I managed to bag 28 peaks this winter so the final 20 will have to wait for next season. I have to say I'm really going to miss the winter hiking. I guess it time to start working on...

Signs of spring: bear and bobcat in Franconia

I posted a closeup photo of the ones we saw on a hike in the Carters this last weekend in this thread... http://www.vftt.org/forums/showthread.php?t=28607

    Mt. Liberty, March 8, 2009

Great pictures! Alex sure looks like she was enjoying herself. I think it's really great you are exposing her to the wonderful world of hiking at such a young age. I wish I had started hiking much earlier in my life.

Nice TR Tim. This was a great hike... but snow fleas? I'd never seen snow fleas before and after taking a macro shot and zooming in, yikes! Suddenly I'm feeling itchy. We had some great views of ex-presidents, including Jeremy's pretty good Nixon impression. We ended the day on Mt...

    Garmin Nuvi 500 questions

I often put tracks on my Garmin 60CSx. The process I use is to open the track.gpx file in map source and then use mapsource to push it to the GPS. I assume the car models are similar. I find the tracks very useful when hiking an unfamilar trail to ensure I stay on the trail. Mapsource is...

    Oh no, another GPS Question

I have a 60CSx and have yet to lose a satellite lock hiking the NH48. I have noticed the trip meter distance reads low, especially when climbing steep sections. I suspect when your speed is very low and records this as stopped time. Apparently the trip meter is based on your GPS measured...

Missing Massachusetts Hiker located and safe

I too solo a lot and really enjoy it. Sure a larger/heavier pack is required to carry extra gear in case you have to spend the night but I'm prepared to if necessary. I also always take my GPS with me and in the winter I make sure I have a recorded track to follow incase the trail isn't...

    Mt Tecumseh/Mt Waumbek '2fer - 02/21/09

I was itching to hike this weekend. With the snow we had in the week and snow that was coming on Sunday, Saturday seemed like the perfect day. I was hoping for something where the trail was broken out. Looking at the forum's Trail Conditions, Bryan reported he'd been up Mt Tecumseh on Friday...

Mt Waumbek via Starr King Trail Date of Hike: Saturday, February 21, 2009 Trail Conditions: Packed powder Special Equipment Required: Snowshoes recommended Comments: Given the snow we are likely to get tonight, the trail will probably be covered over. I hiked in the afternoon and passed...

    Cabot 2/14/9

3648. The GPS records every little up and down where as the 'book' elevation only records the difference between topo lines. Given the GPS elevation bounces a bit, even when standing still, the real elevation gain is more likely somewhere between 'book' and what a GPS records.

    Mt Garfield - 02/13/09

Still on vacation time I decided another winter summit was in my future. Since the forecast was for partly sunny but high winds I decided on Mt Garfield since the trail is sheltered all the way to the summit and I would only have to endure the wind for the last 100 yards or so. The drive up...

Congrats Tom and Laurie on your 1st W48. It was great meeting and hiking with you. Although not much in the way of good views, the brews at Woodstock Inn were sure good. Here are a few more photos from the hike. http://outdoors.webshots.com/album/570116125ODmyUY?vhost=outdoors

Glad you and Sue are alright. Tom, Laurie, Tim and I hiked Mt Cabot yesterday morning and drove by that spot shortly after you must have left. We wondered why there were 2 police cars there. A very slippery spot.
