Laurie and I met BikeHikeSkiFish and Old Man at 5:30 AM at Tim's house. We hopped into one car and off we went. The hike started at 8:00 from the 'closed' trail head near East Lancaster. It was about 10 degrees, and while it was mostly sunny everywhere as we drove up, the mountain kept us in clouds almost all day, and it even snowed for a few minutes. The winds were mostly mild. The hike went at a modest pace. The trail was mostly hard packed, but we could see where people had post holed even with snowshoes on a few days earlier! We arrived at the Cabin around 10:30, and here the wind was much stronger. The trail from the cabin to the summit had been blown over and was hard to pick up at times, but we made it to the top w/o incident.
We layered up here (we should have done so before the cabin!), and headed down. Just as we started we met a solo hiker who turned out to be Lucky Laura. When we got back to the cabin, we briefly admired the view of the brightly lit valleys, and then we went in and had some tea. Laura joined us and we chatted for a while. She's almost a Winter 115'er! Good luck on the last 2 Laura!
The hike back down was pretty quick. We left the cabin at 11:25 and were at the car before 1:00. We met several people on the way down. We celebrated Valentine's Day in style, at the Woodstock Inn!
Now we are both Winter 48 1-ers!
