Katahdin - Baxter Peak via Hunt Trail (aka Appalachian Trail), 8/14/2012

Awesome pics and account of the day Earl! We met the others on the summit so couldn't have missed you guys by too much. It was definitely a great day to be up there! ~1hour for a lap one the Knife Edge huh? Took us almost 2-1/2. I'd like to think we were savoring it ;). Next year I thing...

Question Regarding Foster Field Group Campsite at Baxter, any recent visitors

What the others said. Great spot and excellent facilities. Ending the day in Nesowadnehunk Stream is awesome! Give Ranger Betsy our best.

    The Mt O-J-I Slip-'n-Slide - 8/13/12

On our first day of a great week at Baxter Bash we did Mt O-J-I. I used to be leery of trails over slides, but have become comfortable with them over time. I was expecting this one to be routine based on the trail description, but got a bit of a surprise. In the end though, it was a great day...

    NH 48 speed record

There's certainly no reason to feel bad about a "supported record". What Ryan and the team are doing is amazing. None of the support takes any of the miles or incredible amount of vertical out of this hike. It's all on his legs. I've been having a great time the last two days watching the...

Four More Feet - The story of Randy Pierce's single-season winter 48 2012

I can't wait for this film! I had followed part of Randy's original Vision Quest and then had lost track. I didn't know that he was doing the SSW48 until a week before the finish. We were fortunate enough to be able to hike Cannon that day and congratulate him at the finish. He's such an...

Finding a bit of Isolation 7/25/12

For the last hike of our week in the Whites last week we did Isolation and knocked #43 off our list. What a fabulous day! Perhaps all those people telling stories about how bad the Rocky Branch and Isolation trails are have a plan to keep everyone away. We know the secret now... Here's the...

Who said Owl's Head isn't fun?

Great report and pics! I'm with you guys, Owl's Head is fun. We dreaded this one and wound up having a blast. Might have had something to do with the great group we were in. Glad to see that you followed the rules this time and made it official

Hiker Dies from Fall in Acadia

I'm very afraid of heights and it took several years for my wife and daughter to convince me to do the Precipice. The excuse the first couple of times was easy - it was closed for Peregrine nesting. When we finally did it I loved it. I'm generally OK as long as there is something to hold onto...

Seek the Peak 2012 - We Hike for Brad - Mt Washington via Boott Spur

So true Kevin, so true Donna - it was a bit of a slog part of the way up but yes, we made it just fine. Time was about 4:45 - not too bad. Pretty easy to slow down and get lost in the beauty up there too. I'm sure we would have taken quite a bit longer if we didn't have the time constraints...

Maine Redux - Caribou Mountain 7/23/12

After visiting Maine for the first time with Goose Eye and Carlo last Sunday we couldn't wait to get back. Since we were still at Moose Brook we took advantage of the short drive and went back on Monday to do Caribou. Another awesome Maine mountain! We're officially hooked. The story is...

Venturing Into Maine - Goose Eye and Carlo - 7-22-12

We took advantage of our stay at Moose Brook last week and ventured into western Maine for the first time. Our hike of Goose Eye and Carlo was the perfect introduction and we simply fell in love with this area. Can't wait to get back for more! Here's the blog post...

Hiker Dies from Fall in Acadia

Very sad. We love this trail and were hoping to hike it again this fall. Had friends that did it earlier this week. It would be easy to point to the dangers of the trail, but this kind of thing can happen anywhere. Reminds us that we always need to be thinking and paying attention out there...

Seek the Peak 2012 - We Hike for Brad - Mt Washington via Boott Spur

What an amazing event Seek the Peak was this year. It's taken me several days to process pictures and write this very long blog post and it was almost as emotional a journey as the event itself. The Kilted Clan was back in force this year as we paid our final respects and tribute to our great...

Imp Face - Seek the Peak Warm-up 7-20-12

We decided to do another 52WAV hike as a warm-up before Seek the Peak last Friday. I've wanted to do Imp Face for a long time and we certainly had the perfect day for it! Great way so start out a wonderful week of hiking. Here's the blog post...

Powwow Pond and a Million Water Lilies

Here's a map showing the public launch area on New Boston Rd. This is the spot in the pictures where we were swimming and paddling under the bridge. https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msa=0&msid=217899110969538988358.0004c498ef78b2cd078cd Really looking forward to going back here in the fall...

    Cloudland Falls and Beyond

I won't try to pick a favorite. The light and perspective in each of them is unique (and beautiful). Wonderful images of my favorite place in the Whites.

Powwow Pond and a Million Water Lilies

We had a great two days over the 4th at Kevin and Judy's. Great party, food, friends. The paddling on Powwow Pond and the river (in their back yard) was spectacularly. Kevin said "A Million Water Lilies". I think that may be underestimating! What a beautiful spot! The pond plus the Powwow...

    Kayak venue and size

We've got a Necky Gannet (11.5) and a Tsunami 120. Both are great flat water boats and are by no means too long for river paddling. They are also great when there is wind and chop and track really well. Wouldn't want to go shorter.
