    New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont

I've seen so many awesome trip reports with photos from the Whites on this site. The photos are killer! I've never done any real hiking there due to the distance from my house here on Long Island but I gotta start! My longer trips are usually spent paddling the Adirondacks - which are great...

The Great Gulf is frickin' awesome! 9/2/11-9/4/11

Very very awesome! I think it's time to put down the paddle and put back on the hiking boots. I've got to get up to the Whites!

Directions please - Stony Creek Leanto

I've been down Coreys Road (from Rt. 3) in the past but only as far as Axton Landing. Passing Axton landing, it looks as if Coreys Road crosses Stoney Creek, correct?...and then continues on for a while... I'm looking to get to the Stony Creek Leanto. Pretty sure I need to park at the...

    Mt St Helens (WA) -pics

Wow "dude," ;) that is one awesome trip report! How many hours did the hike take rt? Are those logs in Spirit Lake logs from the eruption in 1980?

    Saranac Lake accress?

I agree. By the way, paul ron...how late into the year are reservations required for lake island campsites? I'm assuming you are staying on Lower Saranac Lake?

    Red Rock Trail

Awesome trip! Great pics! The feature in the ledge could be on of these. Was there just one or were there several in the area? Again...thanks for sharing.

    Irene Storm Track

I think it's cool how the winds are blowing from the southeast rather than the normal west southwest direction. Cool indication of the counterclockwise rotation of the low. Winds are picking up here on Long Island. Beer number 6? :D

    Irene Storm Track

Ahh...very cool. Thanks. I've actually seen the red triangles before but not the red squares.

Never saw this before...what are the two red boxes that showed up in the little icons for Saturday night's and Sunday's forecast? Anyone know? They weren't there earlier today.

Will a little ol' hurricane slow you down?

The media certainly does hype things up quite a bit but I highly doubt anyone is offended. Better to take the necessary precautions earlier than to realize too late that you should've left town. Talking about hype and panic...heard there was a fight in the local hardware store today over...

Will a little ol' hurricane slow you down?

If I'm not mistaken, the local government here has ordered a mandatory evacuation for Fire Island off the south shore of Long Island and a Hurricane Warning is in effect for Sandy Hook, NJ...not far away as the crow flies. Chances are, we'll get some pretty bad weather in the northeast but...

    Earth quake!!!

Didn't feel it. But a lot of people did! I teach Earth Science and when we cover earthquake preparedness, the first thing I tell the students is not to run out of a building. In the event of a major quake, glass could be flying, ceilings collapsing, debris flying, etc... It's safer to get...

How Many Calories did that Hike Burn Off?

...and don't forget the temperature. More calories burned in summer than in winter probably.

    Duck Hole, 8/16 & 8/17

Cool trip. Would like to make it there myself one day. My Uncle and his friends recently paddled to Duck Hole and then traveled further towards Noah John Rondeau's old hermitage on the Cold River. Not much there he said...just a plaque maybe. He said it was really cool though to be at the...

What (or who) got you hiking?

I saw a picture if Dream Lake (Rocky Mountain National Park) in a book. Had to see it for myself so I took my girlfriend and the 4 door Subaru GL sedan on a road trip to Colorado...and on to Utah for a couple extra days to check out Arches N.P. It was all uphill from there (except the...

    Fingers crossed.

SMITHTOWN BAY — The body of missing kayaker Patrick Luca was found Saturday after a search that included the Coast Guard and Suffolk County Marine Bureau. Officials said Luca, 42, of Smithtown was kayaking in an inflatable kayak with his five-year-old son on the Nissequogue River before he went...

    Fingers crossed.

Just on the other side of town where I live, Kings Park, this happened today around 3PM. Saw the helicopters flying overhead. Knew something was up. I hope all ends well but something tells me it wont. Keep your fingers crossed and your life jackets on. I would consider Smithtown Bay open...
