    rudder necessity ?

Nice find on the Tsunamis! With short boats like that, you'll be able to get into a lot of nice secluded places, small creeks and hidden ponds. Anyway, about the rudder...with that said...the boats are pretty short so turning wont be much of an issue. With one or two sweeping strokes, you can...

    Trail Construction

Not familiar with this field myself but was recently asked by someone if I knew of any manuals or books that would help describe proper trail building and maintenance techniques. The trail construction is going to be done on private property near the Adirondacks. If anyone could provide...

Ancient, moss-covered canoe found in Alaska forest

Yeah...love stuff like that too. Here's the same article but with a couple of pictures. There's a great, short book out there called "Qayaq" by David W. Zimmerly (which I think someone here on VFTT recommended to me). I should give it another read but the author also goes into some detail, from...

Ancient, moss-covered canoe found in Alaska forest

From the StarPhoenix (Canada) - July 16...An unfinished Indian canoe, apparently abandoned 500 years ago, has been discovered in a remote section of an Alaska rain forest, according to officials. The canoe, carved from cedar, was discovered under a thick layer of moss and is surrounded by trees...

    Mt. Rainier - Ptarmigan Ridge

Killer report! Climbing Rainier on the 4th was a great idea. Pretty sure there were some recent land slides on Rainier as posted by someone on VFTT. Were you guys anywhere near where they occurred? Did you see any traces of them?

    Cape Cod

Well, remember this thread? All that time planning and waiting really paid off. Thanks for all your help. Dunes Edge Campground couldn't have been better. Would have been happy staying there the whole time riding bikes around the campground with the kids and relaxing. Had one of those...

    USGS Topo maps

Back in the day, I used to get the index maps for free (for any state) via snail mail by writing to the USGS. Not sure if they still do but it is always nice to have a hard copy on hand (also, my Uncle works for USPS :D)

Big rock/ice fall on Mount Rainier

Very cool. The big, red dot? Related? Thankfully no one was hurt.

    Cooperstown, area

Yes, I second that...Vroman's Nose is a great hike for kids...overlooks the whole Schoharie Valley which is beautiful. Fossilized casts of worm burrows can even be found on top...if you're into that kinda thing ;) Just be careful with kids near the ledge. And from what I've heard, Mine Kill...

    Cooperstown, area

The Catskill Scenic Trail is not that far away...and good for a bike ride with kids. You can pick up the start of it in Bloomville, I think...37 miles to the south of Cooperstown. Ahh yes...Ommegang. :) And don't forget the Cooperstown Brewery either...more/better, cheaper tastings :D

"82-acre piece of earth on the eastern slope of Little Porter is still slipping"

Really! The removal of the trees in the past certainly could have lead to less consolidated soils in the years following. When the roots die, the soil isn't held together anymore, right? With the addition of heavy snowmelt over the years, the slide could have developed. Cool stuff...

    What was that shining light?

...Or after. Skylab was destroyed via re-entry in 1979. Maybe you mean the I.S.S.?

    Memorial Day Thanks and Remembrance

Well said! A little disappointed that my town cancelled the parade down Main Street today because of a little rain. I don't remember any wars being cancelled because of a little rain.

    Nettles

Well, as far as nettles go...didn't see one yesterday on my hike. I was in some pretty wet territory too but I guess it's too early in the year. Get out there now if you want to avoid them. What there is plenty of though are those black flies. Couldn't sit still for a minute. Not much of a...

Black Flies - How bad are they?

Just went on a hike yesterday in New York (Catskills)...they are out in pretty high numbers. If you stop for a minute you can almost feel yourself being lifted off the ground a bit. Wasn't much of a breeze yesterday to keep them at bay.
