Hey Jay: Great idea, count me in!!

How much stiffer are Arctis Expe than Degre ?

Chip: I"m going to 2nd Kevin's opinion. I have converted to The North Face "Chilkats" insulated winter boots for most all of my winter hiking. Used with Stabilicers, they have been great for most conditions. My Degrees are now used just for winter overnights or for areas requiring full crampons...

    Why is it…?

I usually consider the amount of traffic I'm likely to encounter on a given trail before heading out. I think my best tactic is to get out real early in the AM. Most of the traffic I see is up-hikers when I'm headed down and I'm only to glad to step aside and let them by with a smile. I made the...

    toll increase in NH

If you're not using an EZ Pass, get one. It costs $25 but, the Hookset toll is $.53 instead of $.75, not to mention being incredibly convienient. Also allows you to look incredibly smug as you cruise past those wiating in the cash lines.

Paradox, nice meeting you on N.Brother. I reversed your route, went over Coe and then down the slide. Nasty but fun!! Anyway, a great day in the most amazing spot in NE. (IMO).

    Water Available on Katahdin?

I can't comment on Caribou, but Saddle Spring is usually quite reliable this time of year. I've gotten water there a number of times. Don't know when you need the info, but I'll be up there this weekend.

mooning the cog train on Washington

The Cog railway is an abomination. I understand that its been there since Moses wore short pants, but the reality is it doesn't belong in an environmentaly sensitive area. You can be arrested for cutting down a tree in the WMNF and this disgusting dinosaur is allowed to continue to pollute and...

    Bax question

I'm still thinking about my earlier post. I think you want to be very cautious about taking a 7 year old up Cathedral. I've been up it a number of times and I don't even want to think about descending it. And thats the problem. If you're child has a problem, turning around and decending may be...

    Bax question

Two issues, I think Cathedral is more physically demanding than Huntington. It is essentially a 1 1/2 mile vertical scramble. As far as exposure, if your 7 year old isn't afraid of the vertical on Huntington he/she should be able to handle Cathedral. If you're concerned, you may want to...

old growth vs. second growth forest?

Another area of old growth forest is the Hermitage. This National Landmark is a 35 acre parcel of what is believed to be the oldest stand of white pines in Maine. Its an amazing place, adjacent to Gulf Hagas, which is an equally amazing place. Just makes you think about what an awe inspiring...

    Beavers removed from below Cannon

First the trail blazes are removed and now the beavers. What the heck is going on? These beavers should have taken up housekeeping in a Wilderness area, then it would have taken an act of Congress to get them removed. Seriously, I remember seeing the dam in years past and can't imagine what they...

    Bugs?

This past weekend, the Wight Trail to Goose Eye was black fly infested. No surprise, the Sunday River area seems to have Blackies about ten months a year!

    The economy of the mountains

I think there are at least a couple of critical things going on here. First, the cost of doing business has skyrocketed over the last few years. Utilities and fuel, insurance, taxes, etc. have really eaten up any profits marginal businesses had. This leads to deferred maintenance and...

    not another solo tent question!

I have been using a SD Clip Flashlight for over ten years. Its not free standing but its light, lots of room for one and gear, cheap, and its bomb proof in bad weather. I know its an old design, but its a good one.

Truth Time: Could you survive 24 hours?

Panic can be a powerful force to overcome. I think everyone has run different situations through their mind, what would i do if this happened, how would I survive if that happened. But when the un-planned happens being able to maintain an inner calm isn't always easy. Its analagous to the boxer...

Truth Time: Could you survive 24 hours?

I'm frequently asked, "Isn't you're day pack a little large ?" It is because I tend to solo quite a bit and I always carry a Gore Tex bivy, a Z rest pad and I usually have my JetBoil. If the injury isn't severe enough to prevent me from getting my fleece on and climbing into the bivy, I actually...

    Plastic boots

I own both the Koflach Degree mountaineering boots and Lowa Structura Light AT ski boot. The Degree fits a wide fore foot with a narrow heel very well, its my affliction also. I've only tried skiing the Degree once, that was enough, not good. I will say this, I'm wearing them less and less. I...
