    Alternative to Fleece Jacket?

Also looks like the Catalyst is made with some recycled materials. The regular Driclime not so much: "Recycled DriClime® lining" vs "DriClime® polyester front lining"

    Alternative to Fleece Jacket?

It's all personal preference but I think getting another wind-breaker (basically a light-fleece-lined water-resistant jacket) jacket like the Driclime isn't going to give much added warmth compared to your current system and you'll just end up stacking multiple thin layers to get warm - base...

    Alternative to Fleece Jacket?

I think you're looking in the right category - synthetic insulation jackets. I switched from a fleece as a mid insulation layer a long time ago for some of the same reasons and haven't turned back. Since we're not in the winter season anymore the selection of insulated jackets is pretty...

    Safety gear conundrum.

I say find a mentor, take a class with a guide, the AMC, a school club, NOLS, Outward Bound, etc. I think the quickest and best way to learn this is to get outside with a knowledgeable teacher answering all your questions, showing the tricks, and explaining the whys of everything. When I first...

    Safety gear conundrum.

Craig, I think this is where these conversations just reach no end. There are too many variables to compute "faster and safer" depending on what or how much you carry. You can't just label one group the "prepared" and the other "light and fast". I would rather like to relabel two groups as...

    Safety gear conundrum.

Oh the numbers... What about throwing in the lessened probability of catching yourself in a bad situation because over time you learn how to make better decisions regarding your outdoor plans. Big difference if everytime I head out (out of my 25) it's into a storm, -40 temps and I start all my...

:D yeah, man, these people are just not thinking 4th dimensionally! Why doesn't anyone have a story that fits her scenario? Because they're either a freakin miracle and are doing book signings right now or they're dead.

Poll: Do you typically carry overnight gear on a winter 4K dayhike?

Ask Joe Simpson and Aaron Ralston about scenarios :D I think if any of us fit your scenario we'd be rich off our book. But what do you mean by "serious injury"? To me a broken ankle or a "hobbable" injury would not be serious enough for me to hang out in the elements doing nothing for 36hrs...

Poll: Do you typically carry overnight gear on a winter 4K dayhike?

Lol, thanks Wu for the vote. Don't get me wrong, I still think that going lighter is a lot more fun and avoids injuries in the long run but no situation is the same. Truth is, if I was hiking or climbing with a child I wouldn't be doing programs that would be stretching the day and had a good...

Is GPS just a 'Stupid Guy Thing?'

For most a GPS is a toy. Guys (even men) like toys, women not as much. Ok, what do I win?

Poll: Do you typically carry overnight gear on a winter 4K dayhike?

No overnight gear. I carry the bear minimum to make it through the day. In fact, if I know the day is going to be longer I'd probably try to carry even less and be even more conscious about my weight. IMO More energy = more agility, less mistakes, shorter day. Carrying more stuff = less...

How Bad Are the Baxter Bugs in June?

I personally am a fan of a Ben and Tonic. Seriously, though, I worry about the tonic giving me gas and GI distention so I only drink it straight.

How Bad Are the Baxter Bugs in June?

I was there for a whole week beginning of July and the I'd rate it at 3 b/sqft (yes, this is a very scientific measurement!) at the worst areas. The bug concentration was very different depending on the current weather and the location. I had a hell of a night at Pogy Pond where they kept me up...

    Sheds & Your Gear

The only one I know can be affected with extreme heat are synthetic sleeping bags - fibers can melt together and it will lose loft. But I think that's more of an issue when storing it in a very hot attic.

Chic Choc Mountains, Gaspesie, Quebec - Week of 2-22-10

Looks awesome up there in the winter. Did a ski trip to the area a few years back and we skied mostly on Albert and the area. What an amazing and cool area. Well worth the long drive if you are in the NE. Oh, Canada!

    Winter mountaineering boot confusion

I wouldn't say "require". I always sleep with my leather mountaineering boots inside my sleeping bag - put them inside a bag and toss them by my feet. It will be easier to keep your boots dry for multiple nights in a row with doubles, but for overnights or a couple nights it's not required, just...
