    Mt. Hood ideas

That's cool. Nothing wrong with going with a guided service to an unknown area. But just so you know, it's pretty unlikely you'll be on Hood alone on the South side ;) Here is a TR from this past weekend, check out the pics: http://cascadeclimbers.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=881092

How wild should the mountains be?

I'm in this camp. I could be in the wildest place with others, but I only feel that wild feeling inside when I am alone and witness something special on my own with no other distractions. Love all my friends and have a great time with them, but I only get that real wild feeling when there is...

Silver Star Mountain (8876 ft), North Cascades, WA (May 2-3, 2009)

;) :D Nah, my comments were just for the climbing community. Many skiers out here have AT setups and there are also lots of splitboarders. During the season at Alpental it seemed like 1/10 had an AT or Tele setup. On Sat, our approach day, there were some skiers who did the Silver Star glacier...

Silver Star Mountain (8876 ft), North Cascades, WA (May 2-3, 2009)

This trip actually worked out pretty nicely considering the tight time frame and the weather we were dealt. Starting with Gig coming out for work and extending his time to climb, and then Dani using her SW voucher from her last trip here (she missed the plane), and Court rounding out the...

Pregnant woman hit by car while fleeing bear!

I wonder if Mrs Grylls was ever chased by a bear.

Mt. Washington and a day in Tucks 4/25/09

Wow, Tdawg... that's insane. You lucked out on the terrain... the bowl has a very forgiving runout. Good experience when you're lucky to live and learn from it. What sort of seems odd to me is that people were still going after it after witnessing repeated slides on the face. I guess all the...

Thanks for the green! ;) I've been studying up the weather out here and this was one of the fun things I learned... and useful to know since it happens so much on the volcanoes. BTW, East Face of Whitney... jealous :D

    Mt. Hood ideas

So you guys climbed the East Face route of Whitney, one of you summitted Rainier and you're thinking of hiring a guide for South route of Hood? Not talking against guided climbs, I'm just curious why you're picking to have this one guided when you seem to have some good experience. A couple...

    Need lightweight one-person tent advice

I also have the Hilight... great tent for days when you don't expect it to rain or be too hot. The Epic fabric is NOT waterproof, only water-resistant... so just keep that in mind. It's my go-to winter rig.

Grid Finisher #9 - Dr. Dasypodidae

Wow, Dr. D., I had no idea!! Geez, that's a lot of peaks and a lot of trails... so when did this start becoming a quest? Or maybe you just reached it by coincidence? :D

    Lenticulars, Totally Turbulent Dude!

Mountains do cause the initial lenticular, which at the crest of a peak is called the cap lenticular, but what follows on the lee side is what is called a wave cloud. When a parcel of air is displaced vertically up by the mountain, causing the cap lenticular, it will then act like a vertical...

Do I Look Like An Idiot?

You know, you should really stick to marked trails... lessen impact, LNT, could get lost in the trees, bothering the animals in their home... the reasons are endless.

    Non-hiking deathmarches

Well, there's always Renata Chlumska's circumcountry trip on kayak and bike. Although I guess that's not really a classic until a few people start doing it. :D

Hikers Ride Avy down Mt. Washington

You're right, for simul climbing with running pro you have to trust that most times your partner isn't going to fall during those sections without pro. I probably wouldn't have done any of those things on a spring day like that so I would've probably have slid too (although probably on skis). I...

Hikers Ride Avy down Mt. Washington

They are lucky and I'm glad they are ok. They lived to learn. I know it's hard to motivate to be in an avy mindset during a nice spring day with posted low danger in other areas (I probably would've done the same), and I'm not condemning anything they did, but IMO, for discussion purposes one...

Do I Look Like An Idiot?

I look like an idiot... this is usually followed by laughter after the accusing party passes me. Well, at least they try to hold their laughter until they pass me so I usually don't get laughed at my face unless they really can't hold it.

    Your boats?

Test paddled the Outer Island a few years ago - what a great boat! My first boat was a Perception Carolina 14.5. Bought a used Wilderness Systems Arctic Hawk and since then sold my Carolina. Next boat? Who knows, but probably something a little easier to tour with - more storage, softer...
