    Loon Lake Mountain

Signs have been changing. The no trespassing signs are gone (since the state acquired the land). The last time I was there a sign said, "Do not block the gate". The friends of Loon Lake Mt group may have put up a real sign.

    Yellow Yellow the bear

WHile on average this is not true, however their intelligence most likely follows a bell curve. I suspect that the bell curves of bears' and peoples' intelligence are not entirely disjoint. IE there are smart bears who are smarter than dumb humans.

    Loon Lake Mountain

It's a straightforward hike. Blowdown is not all that bad at all. It's a typical fire tower hike. Easy, flat, then short and steep. Trail is the same one I remember from 40 years ago.

Question about Legal Sleeping in the Whites

The one thing here that nobody pointed out....Poor planning... rarely seen as an excuse... Hiking until you are just too tired to go any further? One should know where you are... that you're getting close to an alpine zone.... that it's getting late.... that you're getting tired...and act...

NYS Trails mapped on Google Earth / Google Maps

Numbering system in guidebooks is only recent. It was less of a numbering of a trail, and more of a finding a trail from the book on the map Trails are undirected graphs (abstract algebra sense). These can either be described by the edges or the vertices. New england tends to use the edges...

did you feel the earthquake today ?

Made a mess of the house here. Broken glass, pictures off the walls, books out of the shelves, bicycle fell over, statues broken on the floor, spices out of the spice rack and on the floor... Epicenter was not too far from here.

    Bug bites

I do too. I don't think it prevents the blackflies from getting you. It just gives an excuse to have that garlicy meal you love... "Gad, you smell bad." "Yeah, I know, but I had to eat that delicious meal to fight off the blackflies." "Wow, you're hardcore."

    Bug bites

A few days, I think.. It was close to 20years ago, so I'm not sure. I do remember people laughing at me at work after that.

    Bug bites

Some time ago, I fed my face to some blackflies, and came out looking like this: http://mudhead.uottawa.ca/~pete/blackf.html Hard time driving home with only one eye working...

Could/Would you walk or bike to work if it was safer ?

Went back and saw it, but no. I really don't find a difference. in the way they treat me at night or day, although if you are finding that they are giving you more room, it may be that, at night, it is harder for them to judge distances.

Could/Would you walk or bike to work if it was safer ?

Don't know. I've only ridden with lights on.

Protect the Adirondacks names new leader

So I see this thread, but in the main menu, its title is simply "Protect the Adirondack Names".... and I'm thinking... Shoot... they're not trying to rename Nippletop again, are they?

Could/Would you walk or bike to work if it was safer ?

Cool/cold weather, I ride cold. Some people like to be warm, and worry about wicking sweat. Ride cold and you don't produce much. My commute in is mostly downhill. Shower just before leaving, and a touch up at the sink in the bathroom once arrived. Dunno. I do have lights and reflectors...

Could/Would you walk or bike to work if it was safer ?

I've been commuting by bicycle, 5 days a week, year-round, since 1980. It's become such that I feel safer on a bicycle than a car during a snowstorm. I have much more flexibility.

    Brown water

And just because it's brown, does not mean that it is not drinkable. You'll notice the distinctive taste of tannin as you drink it. Wine-nuts are familiar with the taste of tannin in wines.... Me??? I'm familiar with it from drinking brown water.

    46r Dinner This Sunday

The administrator checks the list of hours up until a few hours before the meeting.......HOWEVER.... if it is known that Saturday's work brings you to a patch, there is a fair chance that you'll be assigned the task of moving that overflowing privy...... Shoulda kept your mouth shut, Tom.

USFS considering fees for some CO 14ers

Dunno, but as someone who regularly leads volunteer workers, I would NOT want it. While there are many who would benefit from something like this, it would also attract people who want to do it so they don't have to pay for something. It makes me think of the prison crews doing trailwork. An...

How to leave bike at trailheads?

Stashed in the woods, on the ground. Often with a note which says something like. "If you find this bike, it is not an abandoned bike. I'm hiking and depend on it to get home. Thanks." My thinking is that if it IS found by someone wandering around, chances are good that it will be found by...

Spring snow storm - what happens to the bugs?

Guess it depends on the bugs, but in my experience, years with late spring snowfalls are heavier than usual blackfly years.

    Acclimitize to a 14-er

When I was climbing Whitney, I acclimatized in Death Valley. There was a campground at something like 6K feet. I stayed there, climbed Telescope Peak, (went below sea level after) slept at 6K feet, drove to Whitney Portal spent a night there, climbed the next day.
