    Elk Lake trailhead

But not now. The trails are closed during hunting season. After that, the trails are open, but the last 2 miles of road are closed to automobiles.

    Bear facts

I'll second that recomendation. Also, if you are interested in some other things to read, check out some of these: http://mudhead.uottawa.ca/~pete/bearnotes.txt

    Rescuers fear "Yuppie 911"

It's just another twist, but technology is giving 'confidence' to people to do things and go places they would not otherwise. We'll all be paying for it in the future.

$25,000 fine assessed for teen hiker

Not having a GPS or cell phone... ... solo hiking... Maybe not now, but it will come. Can't you see Perry Mason telling the jury. "He was alone when all hiking books talk of the dangers of being alone... And no cell phone? Ladies and gentlemen of the jury: How many of you would even drive...

Hawaiian air does not take stoves!

They frequently do things like this so that the person at the desk does not have to make a judgment call. Can they be expected to know the difference between liquid/gas stoves? Can they tell if a stove is new? Can they tell if it has been cleaned well enough? It is much easier to not take a...

closest tent site to Marcy summit ?

That's how I remember it. Also... the trail did not take the route it currently does. I don't know when it was re-routed, but it used to arrive near the base of the falls. If you descend now, to see the falls from the bottom, you can still find some of the old trail markers.

    Treadway Mountain...only 5 miles!

It was named in the same vein that the "Shorey Shortcut" was named. There was this guy who fished there a lot. People laughed at him and said that he was fishing in his ocean.

    Orienteering Competitions

I'll second that. I signed up for some local events just to get the detailed maps of Gatineau Park.

    Altimeter

and... when I'm high, I don't give a flying fadoodle what my GPS says.

    Altimeter

My daughter sometimes works with a GPS which is accurate to within a half inch. (It is transportable, but not portable). When she comes home this weekend, I'll ask her how accurate it's up-down-ed-ness is.

    Who does trail work?

I'm close to 30 days annually, but probably not over it most years. I do a heck of a lot more trailwork than recreational hiking

    Untreated Ethan Pond Water?

I frequently drink untreated water in a whole bunch of places, however I don't know if it means that the places are giardia-free, or if I'm one of those carriers who are immune to the symptoms.

    Untreated Ethan Pond Water?

I worry more about camping areas for humans being upstream, than I do for beavers.

    Rolling Ankles/feet

I find that I will roll my ankle most often when I wear heavy (stiff souled) boots. It never happens with sneakers (or whatever they or called these days) and it never happens barefoot.

    MTB but not Road. Why???

I've posted a few of my road-bike trip reports here. You see, from time to time, I walk out my front door, hop on my (road) bike, ride down to the Adirondacks, climb a peak and ride back. To me, road biking and hiking go together hand in hand. These were my reports...

Look before you "take care of business"

Oh come on.... hasn't everyone done this at one time or another? http://newmud.comm.uottawa.ca/~pete/tmpadk/privy1.jpg http://newmud.comm.uottawa.ca/~pete/adkjr/ohfan2.jpg

    Environmentally Friendly Mosquito Repellent Coming?

Interesting... Many many years ago, I remember some people swearing that they wouldn't get bitten if they ate a lot of bananas before hiking. At least that was what I was told when I enquired about the banana in their pockets.

Do you take painkillers, ibuprofen, etc. when hiking?

I don't, but I know I should. I usually just get in the car and start going. When I stop a few hours later, I'm walking like a cripple for a while. A few years ago, after a hike, I drove for a while, then stopped at a WalMart. Hobbling in the door, the greeter offered me one of their...

Putnam Pond Trail Work Weekend with the ADK 46ers: 8/14 thru 8/16

Jane still talks about the beers that disappeared from her cooler. And at Putnam Pond, the beer now comes in kegs. And there are two really cute girls that haven't been there in a while.

Putnam Pond Trail Work Weekend with the ADK 46ers: 8/14 thru 8/16

It was a pleasure to finally meet you, Dennis, and to look at some of your old photos. I was kind of bummed out that I wasn't on the privy crew, but that bridge had to get finished. Could this be the photo you're talking about. http://newmud.comm.uottawa.ca/~pete/adkjr/ohfan2.jpg She's not...
