    Body parts in peak names?

Out around the Tetons, there's Jackson's Hole.

    Round laces or flat?

Laces? Who needs laces anyway. They're mostly used with shoes anyway.

anyone ever ACTUALLY use a magnesium fire starter ?

For the magnesium firestarter. Get an old hacksaw blade. Break off a 2 inch section and tie it to the magnesium. The hard steel and teeth shaves well, and the hard steel and teeth produce a much better spark than a knife does.

Etiquette of "Please take my picture"

You don't NEED to ask, you don't need a timer, or a long arm. The answer is PhotoShop. Work on your skills. Get a few pictures of yourself against a plain background, then put them wherever you want. Heck, with good photoshop skills, you don't have to climb a mountain any more. Just get...

    Adirondack bbq

I'll echo thanks to Spencer & Maddi. I wish I had had more time, but I look at it this way. I was there for 15 minutes which lasted a half hour. In that time, I probably met/said "hi" to over 30 people. That means that I probably hold the record for the rate of meeting people.

$25,000 fine assessed for teen hiker

But who is to say you are prepared? To many people, you are not prepared unless you have a GPS, cell phone, bear spray, locator beacon, etc. Brain does not count.

Anyone use that "5 hour energy"

But your food is not the only feul your body will burn. Everyone has fat to burn. Even the most fit person has at least 5% body fat. One CAN get by on this. Moderate caffeine may help. I once suffered the effects of too much caffeine. I used to be addicted to the stuff, and would get a...

    Backpacks redux (a.k.a. "Busted!")

It goes the other way for me. We're in a store, and my wife sees a packpack (or some other piece of gear). "That's nice, you should get it." "I don't need it. The one I have is 'good enough'" "It's old. Throw it out and get a new one." "No. I don't want to waste something that is still...

    John Bachar dies free-soloing

But given enough time, it IS probability. Given enough time, someone WILL make a mistake. The skill is just the length of time.

    What about DEET?

If you think about it.... the time you're using one is a time that you are potentially quite vulnerable to bug bites.

    What about DEET?

Try this experiment to show how you can taste things absorbed trough your skin. Take a coupld cloves of garlic. Don't crush them, because then you'll get some on your hands which MAY lead to your mouth. Put the cloves of garlic in your book, and then go hiking for a bit, making sure that your...

    What about DEET?

It's one of those things you can 'taste' through your skin. It's one of those things that, if you get enough on your skin, you can taste it, even none of it gets in your mouth. There are several 'chemicals' That get absorbed through the skin and can be tasted like this.

    What about DEET?

In spite of all the tests which show that DEET is safe, some people still wonder about putting something that readily melts plastics on their skin... even in small quantities. Oh yeah.... you should see what DEET covered hands do to condoms.

    What about DEET?

I let the mafia teach me how to protect myself from the bugs. Equipment needed is a tweezers magnifying glass and pin. Catch one bug. Break a kneecap. Set him free with instructions to tell his friends that they'll get worse if they mess with me. Use the magnifying glass to burn a foot on...

    Ways to Hike the 48

Trailhead to trailhead (or tent-back to tent as I got many of them on fall mid-week backpacking trips.) I suppose so, but I never took it serious enough to bother doing something like that. I remember one day I was planning on getting Lower Wiolfjaw and Marshall for my list. I climbed Lower...

    Ways to Hike the 48

I wish I could find that picture so that I could scan it in. It was at a 46er fall meeting. At the table was Fred, Wayne, and Alain. Two of them are in this picture: http://newmud.comm.uottawa.ca/~pete/supper.jpg I've been working on a way of doing the 46. Climbing the peak and seeing...
