    DEET vs. Bug-Off Informal Challenge

And you should have rather large groups. I'm sure everyone around here knows how some people are bug magnets, while others are not. (I think it's that some people are so mean and nasty, that even bugs won't go near them, but that's another story. Because of the fact that personal taste plays...

    The carbon footprint of hikers

That's sort of what got me started on my cycling to trailheads 10-12 years ago. I started thinking (back when gas was $0.80/gallon) that when I retire, I probably won't be able to afford gas for going to the mountains, so I wanted to see what it would be like taking a bicycle. It does limit my...

    Class of 2007 46ers

You mean who WERE when they finished. There are usually a few each year. Actually, I would guess that there are more in the range of 10-15 than there are in the range 20-25. Judging from my experience, I doubt very much it is a normal curve. A wind-swept bell curve. As I implied, there are...

    Class of 2007 46ers

The 46ers do not want to encourage records in general. Especially in the case of the youngest, when there may be parents who push extremely young kids so that they may be the youngest on record..... Yes, there are people who do that. The age of the youngest winter 46er will make you scratch...

    Food for thought

In general, I don't care about what I eat when hiking. What I eat at other times covers me. I've found that, by regular long endurance things (such as 150 mile bike rides, 30-40 mile XC-ski trips), I've trained my body to run off its reserves. I particularly remember one bike ride (120...

    Food for thought

I'm not sure how to answer. Technically, I think I eat pretty good. I tend to like good foods, and, except for the occasional Jos Louis, I don't like junk food. I like to make my own things, and I know what goes into it. But I don't pay attention to its health side. So, in a sense, I'd...

    Ice Axe Length

I like a long axe with a leash. The reason? When I use my axe (which isn't often), I put the pole in my pack, and use the axe instead. I use it as a pole with additional features. I'm not using the leash when I'm using the axe as a non-pole. But that's me.

    Who's got the flu?

No flu for me in quite some time. I don't wash my hands, and I lick doorknobs. My philosophy: "Be kind to the bugs, and they'll go easy on you." BTW... on my commute home, I swallowed a mouthfull of water that most people would not want to step in. "If it don't kill you, it makes you...

    Do we want more snow?

Count me as one who has had enough.... at least at home. That last 2 feet really did it. Light doesn't come in the first floor windows anymore. Heck, I lost my bicycle in that last storm. I was away, and my neighbor's snowblower covered it.... speaking of bicycles.. This winter has been my...

Where can I buy one hiking pole?

If you can live with a ski pole, and not a hiking pole, I have a sure fire way of getting free poles. Go to a ski area in late april/may. Look in the woods off to the side. I'd be surprised if you don't find at least a couple poles.

Allen for my W46 on March 9th

Congratulations! We were going to be there, as we were staying in Newcomb, but the previous day in the santanonis, in the freezing rain, left us in bad shape, and unable to wake up.. so a belated congratulations.

    Compass Help

Even if it DID freeze, oil does not expand when it freezes the way that water does. That expansion thing (higher density at a warmer temperature, is kind of unique to water.

Lots of Rescues - Taking Stock

Yes. In the past, winter use of the Adirondacks was mainly skiers. Hiking is relatively new. The snowshoe rule is to protect/maintain the ski trails. The DEC always had the rule that you had to HAVE skis or snowshoes. That is the safety part. The newer rule is to WEAR them. That is to...

    Define “Bushwhack”

When my son was 10 years old, I took him on a hike, which had a 2.5 hour bushwhack (less than a mile) through thick spruce. I told him, "This is bushwhacking." A few hikes later, we were doing Street & Nye (before the path fixup) and ended up descending on a path which was in the wrong...

    How old are you ?

Right. Usually, my food tastes much better going down than going up. That's my main reason. With one exception, I will not push myself until I throw up. The exception is commuting by bicycle when there is 6-10 inches of wet slushy snow. Cars going by throw this stuff up at me. From time to...

XC glide wax - liquid vrs a solid

I think I have a 2 ounce bottle. It is not the size as much as the ease of applying it when it is cold. Rubbing and corking just don't go as easily as pour and wipe. I got the mask that I wear when waxing with the real toxic stuff. I'm a wax geek..... wanna see my wax closet? The...

XC glide wax - liquid vrs a solid

The real advantage of the liquid stuff, is that you can carry it in your pack, and EASILY apply it in the backcountry. You can also use it on 'waxless' skis, in those sometimes-conditions where snow builds up on the scales. Apply it there. Note also, that there is diminishing returns on the...

    Musings on Safety.

I remember when something like that happened to me after severely scratching the cornea of both eyes. Just kept on going... I do have a worst nightmere. Two of them. I hike alone a lot. Falling through the ice on a lake is one. The other one, is falling into a 12 foot deep spruce trap. I...

Moose rut and perfect weather on Mt. Chocorua, 11/18/07

Up some sister. I never got their names. I was the guy in the yellow reflectorized cycling jacket. Yes :)
