    Family camping/hiking weekend

We were discussing kids and hiking and how much fun they have when they are with other kids (see the girls with altitude thread here and on the ADK website) and one of the members thought it would be neat to have a weekend where families could get together so kids could meet other hikers and we...

    Phelps

I guess I had a momentary laps in judgement because at the last minute we changed our minds about joining everyone and joined the group at the Ark for the winter weekend. I'm glad we did because we had a great time visiting and meeting new people but oh, the trip up Phelps on Saturday was...

    I miss summer

I definately prefer the summer to the winter. It is beautiful to hike in the winter but I can't stand the amount of extra stuff I have to carry. I usually have to carry some of Beth's stuff too and I can't handle alot of weight. I don't know how Seema does it...you're a machine! On top of...

    E. Osceola in snow OR 'Why do I do this?'

congrats on one more mountain down! I had to look at this trip report...the title intrigued me! I often ask myself that usually when it's poor weather, winter, or in the beginning when I'm out of shape. I enjoyed reading your report. Why do we do it, so many reasons like you said but still I...

To tired to enjoy the views?

Hang in there Cold Feet....it takes time to build yourself up to things. It does get better although I always sound like I'm dying going up a mountain, as long as I don't feel like that. ha ha Glad to hear you're getting out there!

    New Baby Hiker

congratulations! Congratulations on your new addition! It's great to have your kids as hiking partners....when they are older and you hike, you will have plenty of time for so many interesting conversations as you walk for hours on end. I know I'm getting a wopping $5.00 a week allowance...

    Cave Dog Here

What you do is amazing! It's nice to hear about your adventures! It makes us dream big....we will probably not try to speed hike the way you do (because I'm slow...just ask my kids) but we can see that if we want to do something and we put forth the effort, we can achieve! That is a great...

    map and compass reading course

Thanks for all the info. I emailed a couple of places and they aren't running anything right now but am on a list. Maybe I can see what I can bribe Dave Metsky with to do a trip! :D I have been to some basic courses but didn't feel like I would be safe using those skills to find my way...

    map and compass reading course

Has anyone taken a map and compass course that they enjoyed that didn't cost one arm and one leg or your first born. (Can't part with him) I really feel like I need to take one with the kids to make me feel a little more confident in my skills.

    Mitts and gloves???

When it's not too cold, I use Glittens (mitten/glove combo) this way when my hands actually warm up, I fold back the top and expose my fingers to regulate. When it gets colder, that's a different story...still working on that.

    Finally we finish Big Slide

We can't wait to go back to the Adirondacks....we found our house for sale on the road up the Garden. We'll be buying it as soon as we win the lottery. Harry saw his from the Brothers. He, also, will be buying his after he wins the lottery. Heehee! I told the kids we need to redo Big Slide...

    Finally we finish Big Slide

We've been chomping at the bit for this rain to stop so we could go out and finish our last peak (for this list, not for good :o ). I double checked with Harry to see if he was still on for today and he said yes. It was finally not going to be raining! It was nice to have someone that could...
