    Mcrillis Tr in winter (Whiteface)?

Descending, the sharp right turn off the old route about 1/2 mile above the Flat Mt. Pond Trail was obscure last year. Woods are open there so a compass/GPS course to the latter trail should be easy if you can't find the turn.

    12,000 Ossippee acres closed

We seem to have arrived at the last word phase of this thread. So here is mine, though it won't be the last: Trail Bandit created a beautiful, useful map of the Ossipees with the well-meaning intent of making them more accessible to all of us. In the process, he made some bad judgments...

    12,000 Ossippee acres closed

While I generally agree with your posts, I strongly take issue with this. Because there is enough public land for your purposes does not mean that is so for everyone. Throwing such statements in the faces of landowners does nothing for your interests but may adversely affect ours.

    Snowshoe gait with MSR Lightning

I encountered the same problem when I first used them a couple of years ago so I filed down the perimeter teeth on the inside of each snowshoe. This has helped a lot and there is still plenty of metal around the shoe for traction.

    TSL Snowshoes

If the 8x25's are almost 5 lbs., as most sites cite, they shouldn't be too delicate.

XC to Upper Greeley Pond from Waterville Valley, 12-23-09

Perfect skiing from the trailhead to Upper Greeley Pond. Nice cover and tracks. Skis. A fine trip with Mike and Allen in cold and windy, but manageable, conditions. Thanks, Mohammed, for providing the original ski conditions! RickB., Mike B and Allen [email protected]

Tecumseh by Mt. Tecumseh Trail from ski area, 12-21-09

Trail was in fine shape, WMS (White Mountain Sidewalk) all the way. We took care of one 8" overhead blowdown and there were no others. Crossings easy and safe. We bare booted with no postholing or traction issues. Up in fall, down in winter. Didn't notice much difference with temps in the...

Black Snout and Mt. Shaw by Mt. Shaw Trail and others, 12-14-09

Mt. Shaw Trail is in good shape with no blowdowns and reasonable crossings. Snow increased with elevation from 6" at the trailhead to more than knee deep up high. Trail is now broken but we got a good workout breaking it out in the deep, heavy stuff. Moose tracks everywhere above 2500'. No...

Smarts Mt., up Ranger, down Lambert Ridge, 12-8-09

Ranger Trail was muddy in several places but the mud is beginning to set in the colder temps. Lots of ice under a few inches of snow. Lambert Ridge Trail also had ice up high and a few inches of snow throughout but not much mud. No blowdowns, crossing on Ranger Trail was mellow. We wore...

Mt. Cube by Mt. Cube Trail (AT), 12-04-09

Trail had long stretches of deep mud and serious erosion. Only a few patches of snow in the woods and no ice. Major crossing was hairball with the high water. No blowdowns. Bare (waterproof!) boots were fine. Poles helpful to negotiate the muddy sections. Nice mountain with interesting...

Tripyramids by Pine Bend Brook, 12-02-09

Trails in good shape with no snow/ice until just below the steeps. Then lots of thin, hard ice, with just a dusting of snow, all the way to Middle Tripyramid. There were several blowdowns and head-hunters and we spent some time removing most of them. Crossings not an issue. Misrospike ST's were...

    Cannon by KRT, 11-25-09

Kinsman Ridge Trail was the familiar eroded trench up to the departure from the ski glade then in good shape to the summit. Some mud. No significant blowdowns. Very nasty thin ice on some rocks, as others have been encountering, in the middle section. Traction not practicable for the short...

Mt. Flume by Osseo Trail, 11-23-09

Trail is in wonderful shape, with not a blowdown and only a few minor muddy spots. No ice. No special equipment needed (yet). After driving up under cloudy skies, we were treated to deep blue over us for the entire hike, with the thick, low clouds approaching from the south presenting a lovely...

Percival through Cotton, Crawford-Ridgepole Trail, 11-18-09

We ascended the Mt. Percival Trail and descended the Mt. Cotton Trail. Another set of trails in great shape for this time of the year. Minimal mud and only a couple of minor blowdowns. No crossing issues. Tons of leaves, of course, and they're tricky at times. No snow/ice, 50F! Poles...

Whiteface & Passaconaway, up Blueberry Ledges, down Dicey's Mill, 11-16-09

Trails generally in good shape. No signs of snow or ice, given the continuation of shorts weather. Some mud on the Rollins Trail, not bad. Brook was high at the crossing near the mill site but we all easily got across dry. A few recent blowdowns. No gear needed. Another warm day with blue...

Cardigan, up Holt, down Mowglis, Manning Trs., 11-11-09

Trails clear of ice and snow except for a couple of black ice patches on the upper corners on the Holt Trail, of all places. Easily avoided once seen. No blowdowns or crossing issues and very little mud. Poles helpful on the leaves in the woods. Another perfect day, comfortable and with clear...

Chocorua, up Brook, down Liberty Trails

Date of hike 11-09-09. Both trails in good shape with no major blowdowns. No snow or ice. Lower portion of Liberty Trail is in its usual muddy condition. No crossing issues. Some wet spots on the Brook Trail ledges call for care at times. Deep leaves on the trails in the woods. Poles helpful...
