    Age-related "power endurance" limitations?

Great topic. I think I discovered my maximum HR this summer on a hot bike tour climbing Vail Pass from the west; but a quick stop every couple miles and hydration/electrolytes made it so I was the only one in my group (some a lot younger) to summit. I'm 53. So now I just know what that is, and...

    All the near misses

Clearly a situation where making camp and spending the night would have been the safer option. :D

    All the near misses

Not a physical injury, but I discovered real hypothermia on a multi-day northern Presi trip in mid to late July about 18 years ago. Rain, high winds, temps in mid 30s and I had no long pants. Actually got all the "umbles" and was making bad decisions till my brother verbally beat the crap out of...

Wyoming - GTNP, Yellowstone, Wind River Range

Awesome!! Thanks for the great report and it sounds like you had a fantastic time. Sorry to hear about the splinters. People are crazy. 5000 watts to heat your morning coffee. And how can you reserve sand? Reminds me of Long Island Sound. Now that our kids are in college and we aren't slaves to...

    Gulfside Trail ?

Only caveat is on the way back down: my first time up Jefferson waaay back when involved an "easy" hike down the Castle trail (which was a bit tough) followed by the infamous Link on a contour back to Caps Ridge. For your entertainment, search "Link trail" on this forum. ;) Otherwise sounds like...

    Father Daughter Hike Rescue

I'm sure there will be the inevitable enumeration of all the things they could have done better, but the footing on whatever trail they were on from that pic looks downright gnarly. I'm sure that slowed them down, especially being from where they are now. I don't remember the TRT (if that's the...

    San Juan National Forest

Such a great area. Living in CO, I still have not backpacked there though it's high on my to-do list. It's FAR from Denver (6+ hrs) so we've been there as car tourists only. Couple things: - The Chicago Basin area is the classic backpacking place. Info...

Sure hope folks aren't heading up Mt. Washington today

I think they had the good fortune to put the temperature probe in a tailpipe of a car at 5300' inadvertently.

    Best hikes in the Berkshires

Only long high-ish one I've done goes from Williamstown up and over Greylock. You can turn around or keep going a bit further south on the AT, perhaps making a loop with a bike spot. There is really no true above-treeline in MA. For 5-year olds there are so many- if you're looking to stay in...

Woman climbs tree to escape coyotes - Near Boston!

"To be fair the fear and anger directed coyotes also comes from the documented attacks on domestic pets. The fact is that coyotes feed on small mammals, and as generalists that sometimes means domestic cats and dogs. Schadler says the best thing we can do for coyotes is educate them. And the...

Grand Canyon - Phantom Ranch trip planning

There's a fairly long thread on here about Rim to Rim (R2R) hiking from last year. Plenty of info, pro and con. Might be helpful if you're considering a roundtrip to the North Rim from PR. North Rim is pretty magical IMO, and so, so different from the South Rim hordes.

    Mtn. Biker killed by Cougar

A co-worker of mine is good friends with the victim's mother. What an awful, weird thing. Apparently they did EVERYTHING right and it still didn't work out positively. "Hungry, motivated young cougar" was the only explanation. Sheesh. Really all of us who hike anywhere in the West are at similar...

    Spring Time Rescue. No traction

Wow, coulda easily been me in, oh, about 1983. Having a driver's license and a full tank of gas is a powerful and dangerous thing at that age. We picked things like Tripyramid North slide in sneakers with suboptimal tread, Liberty/Flume (the easier way... we did have a WMG!) a bit later in the...

    Logistics Of The Mahoosuc Range

Claustrophobic here, done the Notch a few years back. Though everyone's experience varies and I would NOT do this with a big pack with stuff sticking out of it (as I did- almost lost my sleeping pad and bag down a bottomless hole), the half dozen or so squeezes are short (20 feet max? most are...

Wyoming - GTNP, Yellowstone, Wind River Range

Family trip to the Great Sand Dunes 4-5 years ago was priceless. Sledding on sand (much much slower than buttsliding down Wildcat) and a good campfire, but the thing that did it for me was telling the kids "just look up" after we had dinner in Alamosa and drove back to our campsite. They both...

Wyoming - GTNP, Yellowstone, Wind River Range

YES. Having overdone the hiking and solitude thing just a bit when my kids were that age (from their viewpoint), you are definitely on the right track. Now that they're in college, we like more of the same things!! Had some of my best hikes with my 18 year old daughter just last summer. Adults...

    Sub 2000 Ft Mountain Suggestions

You mentioned PA. I lived there for a while near Allentown and really enjoyed the LONG ridge walks on the AT and other parallel ridges. You can go as far as you want. Good opportunities for bike spotting. Great migrating bird potential right now. Watch for rattlesnakes in sunny areas.

    Hiking With Diabetes

Did some prolonged dayhikes (up to 20+ miles) and long section hikes (4-5 days all over NE) with a buddy with type 1 DM (the kind where your body doesn't make insulin so you need to inject it), a former poster on this board, before moving west. He led them and continues to do lots of stuff both...

    Which Trail? (Cannon Mountain)

That would be my main concern if visibility is good and the trail is tracked out- the KRT section between Coppermine Col and the ridge. If you do it as a loop (counterclockwise), you'd better be very comfortable downclimbing steep slick sections because of the 1/4 mile or less that drops off the...

    Advice for Zion/Bryce/Arches/Moab Quick Trip

St George is a really nice little town (and growing, may not even fit your description of "little") in an area with very few nice little towns. Good and inexpensive motels too. I'd highly recommend it as a base. Everyplace is a drive, but that's what you get out there.
