    Hip Flexor Pain

Yes. Typically (fortunately) has only been from overuse, after a hard snowshoe trek or steep hike where lots of steps up > a foot or so, especially with a heavy pack. Relative rest, like hiking on less steep trails with less weight, helps, as does stretching when you lean your upper body back...

    Cliff Walk - Newport RI

From what I remember having gone to college there 25ish years ago and lived nearby for a few years after, there was always one section or another being damaged by storms. Sandy probably did more than her share, but the exposure and where Sandy went ashore probably made it not much worse than...

    Interesting article about Lightning

Yeah, somehow I feel much less comfortable on a mountain in a thunderstorm out here than I did back in NE. You would think, given the exposure etc of mountains with >2000 vertical feet above treeline, that deaths from cold, getting lost, etc would be high on the list... but lightning is king...

And for today's SAR debate: what if the mountain attacks you?

Wow. The Hunt is no picnic, but if I had to pick a trail off Katahdin that seemed the most stable I would probably pick the Hunt! Abol and even Saddle (for a bit) have plenty of rock to slide, Cathedral has a history of significant rockfall every few years, KE is what it is, but Hunt has bigger...

    Best Route For Isolation

I'd let weather and climbing strength decide. Windy or cold or kind of wet or less strong climbers --> RB. Nice weather and strong climbers--> GB or GB-RB. Very very wet--> GB as long as not too windy.

    Little Gem in my neighborhood

LOVE it- worked a summer in Farmington years ago and yes indeed it is a good grunt up that hill! And it was aptly named- yum.

    Bruised or Broken Rib

Broke ribs twice after a fall- once when skiing when I was 28, once when I fell running (don't ask) when I was 46. Both times it took exactly 36 days to heal. Till then, no running, sneeze with your mouth open (it can be done!) and don't get a cold, no matter what. But I could cycle, and I could...

    Grand Canyon in July

North Rim... the way the canyon SHOULD be. :) Allow extra time there, you won't want to leave... especially after starting on the South Rim amid the crowds and hiking through an oven on "self-clean".

    TSA Regulations

If it matters, REI and a couple other good stores are just 5 minutes off I-70 in downtown Denver as you head West. It's very well stocked, and there are a couple other non-chain stores there too which are worth exploring. Cool area too, right near Confluence Park which is a fun if artificial...

New grist for the SAR debate from Brown University study

I have a picture of myself on my first winter hike up Monadnock >30 years ago when I was 16. My chosen attire for that snowy day was NBC (Nothing But Cotton). I had an aluminum canteen full of water and marveled when I got to the top that all but an ounce had frozen solid and my pants were like...

    Colorado 14ers

Update from RMNP yesterday and the day before: snow gone below 9000', patches 9-10K, some deep snow (4 feet or more in spots) 10K to treeline- more of course in the deep woods and the north sides of things, above treeline snowfields alternating with bare patches and melting fast. Highs this...

    Colorado 14ers

Sounds like a great plan. I think the chimney at the Pamola end of the KE is class 3 and the rest is exposed class 2. But arguments about this are as common out West as arguments about dogs on trails back East. :) :)

    Colorado 14ers

I guess this is more for others reading this thread who plan to come out, as you seem to have some experience with altitude... but for most, that many days of hiking in a row including some 14ers is a bit much to tackle, coming from sea level especially. Almost everyone gets kind of slow above...

Poconos / Delaware Water Gap info needed

Very cool- small world Carol. We had family reunions at Shawnee every 3 years for about 4 cycles- from what I understand it would have been underwater if the dam had been built. I helped get 10 or so relatives "lost" (they thought they were, but they weren't really) on Mt Tammany during reunion...

Poconos / Delaware Water Gap info needed

The road along the river (mostly Rt 209) from Stroudsburg to Milford is gorgeous, goes right along the river, mostly, through the Del Water Gap NRA. Interesting story of why it exists (would have been all under a big lake if a planned dam had been built, but advocacy saved the day). We drove it...

Want to do a Presi traverse in Aug - but not in one day.

Um, yeah, what Kevin said exactly. I tried to do something along the lines of your plan when my wife and I were dating long ago, and we wound up spending a fairly uncomfortable night in the Dry River area east off the ridge after having waited out a long thunderstorm near Lakes of the Crowds. We...

    Insoles for hiking boots...

Green Superfeet. I have moderately flat feet and beat the crap out of the inside of most shoes/boots I own. These things have extended the life of my boots by a long stretch, and help with soreness too.

    Rochefort Ridge - Mont Blanc

Nononononono. No. No. No. This is why I will not hike about a half dozen fourteeners. Great video but I think I needed a sedative just watching it.

    Backpacking Colorado Wilderness

So, you mention mid-June, trouble over 10-12K feet, and solitude. Just a few thoughts: 1. Go south and west- Mesa Verde, Great Sand Dunes (crowded though), lower elevations of San Juans, etc. Snow will melt out sooner there and opportunities for solitude much better once you get south of CO...

Helmet cam captures ice climber's fall

The fall took 31 seconds- that was waaaay more than 100 feet and I bet way more than 100 meters. And he lost at least 1 if not both axes along the way. Looked like he was maybe distracted by the ice chunk and leaned backwards - I wonder if he had leaned in and hunkered down if it would have...
