    Mt Mansfield Hut Burns

Its very accessible from Rt 108 (the road that goes through Smuggler's Notch) on the Long Trail, even more so if the road is not closed and covered with deep snow, as I recall. So the assumption is that it is would not be treated with the same degree of care as experienced hikers would give to a...

    Hiker Rescue in the Pemi

I did not mean to make "Luddite" disparaging to you. By things with batteries, I meant cell phones, gps, and now beacons. On this board and more than half my hikes, I see some people gently (or not so gently) disparaging those with a GPS or SPOT. I refer to these people as luddites. I wanted...

Is Owls Head really a 4K?

To add to Doug's point, garmin connect can be set up to ignore ALL the altitude data recorded by the device, and substitute the altitude corresponding to the position recorded by the device.

    Hiker Rescue in the Pemi

FYI, long ago, it was suggested that Kate's PLB is older technology which even under ideal conditions can't pinpoint below a circle with a diameter of kilometers. It was designed for maritime use, where an area that large could be easily searched. It is outfitted with a localizer transmitter...

    Hiker Rescue in the Pemi

A cardholder will only get charged if that person were reckless and intentionally created a rescue scenario. Without published reports, the boundary between recklessness and negligence is fuzzy. "A person acts negligently when he or she acts in such a way that deviates from the way a...

    Hiker Rescue in the Pemi

Yes, hot liquids especially plenty of sugar, carbs, and free-of-caffeine can help for a little while. I was assuming he tried that and even had dinner (as he had a tent and gear for an overnight). I assumed that the root cause was wet hiking layers, making him reluctant to try to walk out the...

    Hiker Rescue in the Pemi

Hiking with Cast for Gamekeeper's / Skier's thumb

I jabbed my thumb last fall. I went to my primary doctor. He took an xray and did not find anything. 4 months later the pain was continuing and was shooting down my forearm. I went to an orthopedist, and he referred me to a surgeon because "it was too late for it to heal on its own"...the...

I wonder if Garmin will be refreshing its hiking gps line any time soon?

I wonder if Garmin will be refreshing its hiking gps line any time soon?

The Garmin 64st is at an Amazon all time low price, at $279 but could go back up instantaneously. Here is a tip: go to www.camelcamelcamel.com (3 camels), enter the Amazon product you want to buy, and set up an email to be sent when the price gets acceptable. On the camelcamelcamel site, you...

Can I carry Microspikes on board my flight ?

Right, but the point was that if you end up in boarding zone 3 or 4 and they want to check your carry-ons, telling them that there are camcorder batteries in the bags may keep your bag in the cabin. It usually goes up front.
