    Mt. Rainier Experiences

Re: thanks all That's a good plan. Glacier hiking/climbing isn't that difficult, but there are some things to learn that you don't do winter climbing in the Northeast even if you do technical ice climbing. Crevasse avoidance / rescue is just something we don't worry about here. Some...

    shoeshoes / crampons

If you plan on climbing any peaks, you'll almost definitely want snowshoes (it's still only mid-April after all). Crampons are possible depending on how steep / icy your route is.

    Garfield Saturday?

With the warm temps forecasted, snowshoes would be a very good idea. Otherwise you may be sinking knee deep or even waist deep in the snow. Crampons would possibly be useful on the steep section just below the summit on Garfield. Be aware that the winter parking for Garfield is just off Route...

Strange Pattern to This Winter's Fatalities in the Whites

Most accidents have a chain of events, all contributing to the outcome. Throw in a little bad luck and things can get out of hand quickly. With the huge number of winter hikers these days, the number of accidents is thankfully small. It's easy to see a few things that may be factors in...

    Mount Washington

July/August is probably the warmest time of year, but also probably our worst air quality. It's quite likely it will be hazy w/ limited views. I hate climbing a peak like Washington only to find 5 mile visibility in haze. I'd vote early to mid September as the most likely time to have good...

Top ten innovations of all time

An innovation from the last decade: Online trip reports / trail conditions. Talking with people this past weekend on the trails in the Adks., I was struck by how many were doing certain trail-less peaks because they knew the trail was broken out after reading about it on the web. Changes the...

    Zion NP

Plenty of good advice here. Personally I like Bryce, but love Zion. My favorite hike is to Observation Point, but Angels Landing is a great hike also. For a shorter hike, Emerald Pools is great as is Hidden Canyon. I've never been out there this early in the year, so it wouldn't surprise...

Dix range via Elk lake in wintertime

As Dennis said, conditions are everything. Last year we used this route to approach Dix. No one had signed into the register for a couple of weeks and we got to break trail thru 2 feet of new snow the whole way. Beyond the Slide Brook Lean To, you get into areas that were devestated by...

Warmer inside a tent? yeah right!

If you can believe the little thermometers that attach to a zipper pull, then it's been my experience that it's 5 to 10 degrees warmer inside a tent versus the outside temperature. Certainly the lack of wind helps a lot also.

    Stupid People

About half way up Mt Rainier, we ran into a guy that was climbing solo. He asked if he could buy a pair of crampons from us. We declined the offer as we were using ours at the time. Thankfully, he then descended rather than following us up onto an even more crevassed glacier than the one he...

    New Hamphire Mountaineering School

I've heard good things about all 3 schools. I can personally vouch for Charlie Townsend at EMS who gave me my first ice climbing lessons some years ago. A good guy and excellent instructor. Some friends also had good experiences w/ Joe Lentini at EMS.

    NH Winter 48 record comments

Great job! It took me 16 years to hike all of them in winter. Guess I set my sights too low! Awesome! :)
