    Peaks near Rumford, Maine-help?

I am sure there is a marked trail up the north side of Spruce. I THINK the trailhead is at 44.4331 by 70.591. Take the South fork in the road just South of Milton. Last year Abram had prohibited any non winter access to their trials. Contact the office if anyone is there and they will have...

    Mt. Carlo from the East

Answer....yes. Today I found the Wright Trail. This blue blazed trail leaves The Sunday River Road in Ketcham and follows the Southern branch of the Sunday River to its headwaters in a steep sided cirque just to the NE of Goose Eye. I didn't have the time/energy to make it to the AT but I am...

Does biking train one for hiking?

According to this article: http://men.webmd.com/features/biking-and-erectile-dysfunction-a-real-risk?page=2 it is a real but solvable issue. I agree, if you don't experience it, don't worry about it. Anyone ever tried one of these "noseless seats" Sheldon poo poos but was embraced by the...

Does biking train one for hiking?

The cutouts were originally designed for males. The Perineal nerve is in the area and can be damaged by prolonged pressure causing numbness and tingling and sexual diysfuction eventually although I can't recall exactly how that happens. Mrs. YS says the pressure relief saddle she uses is simply...

Does biking train one for hiking?

Hi Nadine. Interesting thread creep. My knees and I are thankful for my triple. I didn't get a change to check with any of my physical therapist co-workers today about lunges, but I did check the website of the American Physical Therapy Association. This is the governing association for PT...

Does biking train one for hiking?

Yep, lunges are ok for healthy knees but not for anyone recovering from chondromalacia patella. I suspect you meant to say that while lunges emphasize eccentric contractions they also require CONCENTRIC contractions as the knee extends out of the lunge. Not to be nit picky but that might have...

Does biking train one for hiking?

Don't see why lunges would be bad as long as the knee remains flexed at greater than 90 degrees. In fact, it is the only exercise you mentioned that requires the eccentric contraction Doug and I have been talking about.

Does biking train one for hiking?

Doug, you are right, of course. I totally forgot about eccentric contractions in downhill hiking. There is another factor which makes downhill hiking a unique activity and that is the ballistic nature of the heel strike. Heel strike while hiking down hill transmits hundreds of bounds of force up...

Does biking train one for hiking?

Our customary summer physical activity is road riding, usually between 60 and 90 miles per week. My question was will this activity prepare us for the week long hiking vacation in Glacier we have scheduled for the second week in September. To investigate, we took a 6.5 mile hike to Old Speck on...

My knees: My experience with patellar-femoral syndrome

Tim, What an amazing road to recovery. I admire your tenacity! As both a therapist (OT) and an aging athlete I share your frustration with some of my colleagues who define “functional” in a very pedestrian fashion, rather than based on the value system of the patient. Functional for you is...

mooning the cog train on Washington

Alternatives to mooning Well, if mooning is a problem we could implement an *educational action* i've been contemplating over the years. First we subtly gather up bagsfull of the coke dust littering down wind of the cog. Then gather at some appointed time on the up-wind side of the cog, nice...
