I'm thinking of going fer a few days of hiking in Grafton Notch. Any good maps available? The AMC map only shows the baldpates.

Mahoosucs

C'mon up to Carlo Col campsite and work on the boundary with us. We will be setting up base camp there again on Wednesday AM and starting south on the trail to where we left off last Saturday. Just listen for the sound of the brush cutting woman off the AT. Then just plunge right in and whack over to us. Since the corridor is a thousand feet wide through there we are rarely more than 500 feet off the AT. If you come wear bushwhacking gear. We drive in on Success Road, and take the Carlo Col trail up. The trail has been marked through the clear cut mess by blue blazes painted on rocks, stumps and anything else available.

Even though I won't get to use that map anytime soon, thanks for posting it!

I can't help but notice that a certain parking area (rhymes with "fetch 'em") just barely got put onto the map, even though it is presently irrelevant to the GLT. I wonder, how long before it becomes relevant, and is tied in to the loop?

Mahoosuc Notch is easily accessed from fetch'em via... well, you can get there from a trail but that's longer. Anyway, I've been eying the network of old logging roads that work their way up towards Miles Notch. I'm confident that with only minimal bushwhacking one could walk a nice loop, fetch'em-> notch/A.T.-> GLT/Miles Notch-> & back.

I've been up to the notch that shorter way, on skis. I loved the views of the steep hills around you all shrouded in fog and snow. That loop you describe would be awesome, though it wouldn't include the notch unless you went out and back.

I think it is cool that there is no short trail to SRWC (it could be a pretty easy walk) from either direction, and hope they choose to leave it as a bushwhack/logging road hike from fetch'em. Just my opinion. :D

So what kind of a ski up was that? I was just up the Wright trail just to the West of where you went--looked like that area is open enough to be an ok ski. How far into Ketchem is the road plowed?

A little late on the reply, but I (mostly) beat the ski season. If you're asking about the road from fetch'em, it's a grentle grade with numerous obnoxiously deep drainage ditches that require side-stepping or wings. On the bright side, these ditches seem snowmobile proof. Otherwise Mahoosuc Notch would be a pretty easy sled destination. Sunday River Road has been plowed to the twin bridges in the past, but someone said recently that might no longer be the case.

SRWC is one of the few bushwacks I've done. It was a short, but fairly strenuous trek from the Screw Auger Falls PL (In the winter - I just walked across the frozen river upstream from the falls).

The "bushwhack" from the wright trail parking area to the base of the notch was somewhat blazed by Outward Bound several years ago. Walking out of the notch is easy, just keep the brook to your left until you hit the old bull branch road, than take a right and walk until you get to the wright trail parking lot. It may be a bit more of a challenge going up into the notch from the wright trail, as you would need to pick the right stream to take a left at, but a GPS or basic routefinding skills should suffice. I do remember several deep ditches across the closed section of bull branch road and the softwoods were starting to grow into the path, so it may be a day of getting whipped by wet spruce boughs.

Note that there is a water shed improvement project going on in that drainage to try to reduce the amount of siltation getting into the Sunday river which might open up some of the old paths so the folks doing the work can access the area. Beware of flagging as its probably part of that project.
