    Study: Northeast winters warming fast

There is one good thing about predicting dire weather disasters fifty years from now. You never have to admit you're wrong.

If I've driven by it once, I've driven by it 9 times (by the same route). I took some some knocks trying to figure out #5.

    Brand New VT Map Quiz!

I think I know number 5, after all Vermont is my bread and butter. I might have #10 also, you might be on the road for 9 hours before you figure that one out. However #6 is kicking my butt which is embarrassing since I have probably hiked it if it's a 3k in Vt. It looks sort of like something I...

The passing of a member of our hiking family.................

Niel and Sylvie There is no way that I can comprehend what you are going through right now. All I can say is that it looks like your son was someone to be proud of, and that my thoughts are with you in this difficult time. Phil S

    Corey Road Parking

An inquiring mind is interested to know how this snowfall will effect the status of Corey's road. Even if they plow to the camps, they won't clear the summer trailhead? Just checking.

    Roads conditions - Rangeley region

I can tell you that as of late September the route consisting of Morton Cutoff -> Lincoln Pond -> Wiggle Brook is drivable by a passenger car all the way to the height of land that is commonly used for the start of the Cupsuptic Snow bushwhack. Beyond that, the road that goes down to Porter...

Camping in VT near Burke - Umpire - East Haven 3k's ??

It goes south from Route 105 about half way between Island Pond and North Stratford. There is a street sign on it. The Vermont Gazetteer shows it as an unimproved road but it is actually in good shape.

    altimeter advice

High Gear Altitech I use a High Gear Altitech. I bought it because of the carabiner clip that it uses to attach to a back pack. It's very handy. It works great about 90% of the time and 95% of the features work. Let me tell you about the other 10 and 5 percents. 10% of the time it doesn't...

Camping in VT near Burke - Umpire - East Haven 3k's ??

Confirmed. There is a campsite on the South America Pond Road. It's an old horse staging area and has a privy (Which had not been recently maintained as of last fall). It's on your right a few miles in, very handy to the Senecas.

    Personal Locator Beacons

I don't. I get that kind of thing from people also. My goal in life is not 100% safety at all times. Leave a smelly shirt in your car and they can use the scent dogs to find you.

West Dorset, VT: First Solo off trail

Congratulations, and thanks for the trip report. It's perfectly rational to have a little trepidation about wandering off into unknown woods alone. Stop going when you stop feeling the need to be cautious and self aware. The world needs more dorky hikers wearing compasses and altimeters.
