Whack a mole; Nancy, Bemis, Anderson, Lowell

Little Brown Mushroom and I decided to knock some peaks off his NE and NH 100 lists. Since I have done these peaks I was elected guide. Steve brought me a breakfast sandwich and coffee as payment. I soon showed that was about what my services were worth. My memory of the turn to Bemis was realy...

    Sharpening Snowshoe Crampons?

Not sure what you have for metalworking skills. I also cut pieces of steel from old bindings, abrade the surfaces, and J-B Weld them to reinforce the two front crampon teeth. They break right at the rivet. I have broken six or seven since I got my Lightnings. MSR is good about replacement, but...

    Sharpening Snowshoe Crampons?

The Lightnings are aluminum. Very difficult to overheat and ruin the temper. On snowshoes with steel crampon rails this might be an issue.

    Sharpening Snowshoe Crampons?

I've sharpened mine several times. A file will work, but a small angle grinder makes it much easier.

    Baxter Winter routes?

Thanks for the info. Not sure I would want to be up there in a blizzard. If we have bad weather we would probably head up for Coe and the Brothers. My hope was to go up Hunt or Abol. I'm sure Abol would be an easier route but don't know the park policy. Abol was closed to use this summer. I've...

    Baxter Winter routes?

I am hoping to get in to Baxter this winter. What routes have people used during winter? I would love to access everything from the west, but don't know the viability of Hunt in the winter, and whether Abol is an option even though it was closed in summer.

    Carrigain Brook Crossings?

Becky and I were there today. We went in via the old trail and out via the reroute. Both water crossings are extremely low. Easy rock hoppin.

    Gorham Loop

Gave the loop a shot on Saturday. I felt tired from the moment I left Gorham. Unfortunately the much hoped for second wind never showed up to help me along. I decided to bail before crossing rt 16. That piece of the loop was great and I enjoyed Chapel Rock and Pine Mt. Great views for minimal...

Macs Range plus Great Range Traverse 9/14/14

Steve (Little Brown Mushroom) and I left the LOJ at 4:20 after spotting a car at Rooster Comb. Things went smoothly til we broke treeline on Wright. There was hoar frost on the trees and a glaze of ice on all the rock. Neither of us had spikes with us so we skated slowly along as best we could...

    Hut Traverse

TJ's, not planning on gridding this. We are in the middle of gridding the GRT. I think an H2H grid would take a mightier (and younger) man than me! Stinky, thanks for the input and encouragement. I think my next one I'll try adding the summits. If I can still keep it under 24 I'll consider...

    Hut Traverse

Thanks for the input. The shorter hike out is definitely appealing. Swore I would never repeat this hike, but find myself planning the next. Want to add Pinkham and the Presi summits this time.

What do you guys think of the various pluses and/or pitfalls of W-E vs E-W?

Nicely done! Great report. I think next time I'll have to try it East to West. But Garfield Ridge near the end....
