Interesting Stuff!: 8-Mile Loop Hike on NE Side of Mt. Chocorua (20-Jul-2010)

Kids This is a great kid hike. The climb to the ledges is fairly gentle, pretty and not overly long. There is some scrambling at the beginning, which the kids love. The hike from there over two of the "sisters" to the summit of Chocorua is nearly all above tree line...another kid favorite. The...

Question about Legal Sleeping in the Whites

Do you drive 66mph on the hwy? You are splitting hairs. Would I do it...yes. I think the rules are meant to prevent sleeping on the top of Mt. Chocorua or on a flat rock in the middle of the East Branch. If you have to search for a spot that is so "gray" that the Supreme Court would have to...

Northeast Ridge (III, 5.7, 5.8 var.), Pinnacle Buttress, Huntington Ravine (7.31.10)

Thanks for the look from a climbers perspective...I'm so used to hiking that the climb report is a cool change. Nice photos too.

The Bonds, Guyot, Zealand south to north 7/27

There's a boulder on top of Bond...it's the one you can see from Bondcliff...that sits alone on the South facing side of the summit. http://picasaweb.google.com/billmahony/Bond?feat=directlink If you stand on it you get a great view down to Bondcliff. The whole area where this boulder is...

The Bonds, Guyot, Zealand south to north 7/27

I noticed someone was fencing up Guyot (both knobs) too. The whole concept seems a little silly given the concept of bushwhacking, but I guess if it keeps a few people off the rocks and plants that isn't too bad. It really mucks up the look though....

Passaconaway: Dicey's Mill vs. Oliverian Brook?

6 of 1, 1/2 dozen of the other I have taken dog (65lb golden) on both routes. Both have water along most of the trail so swimming and drinking were not really issues. There are a number of water crossings (tiny) for the dog to get a drink along both routes. Square Ledge Trail (to get to...

What Do You Call Someone Who Hikes Nearly 11 Miles to See a Waterfall? (17-Jul-2010)

Sweet Happy, I have decided that I no longer need guidebooks. I just review your trail reports and then I can plan some awesome hikes. Your pictures show me the details I really care about....I see two swimmin' holes with rock ledges on the sides...now that's worth 11 miles (or more)!

Trek to a Prehistoric NH Volcano, and to a Pond with a Prehistoric Feel (July 2010)

Nice adventures (and pictures) as usual. So are the Balfaces, Whiteface Bowl and Jobilunk Ravine by Moosliaukee former volacanoes too? Duck Pond is a tough whack from the North too, but the trip up the brook from Signal Ridge is no picnic either. It's a long boulder hopping run for several...

Lost Pass Found via Snows Brook Trail Cascade Brook Trails 5/31/10

Lost Pass from Flat Mountain Pond is actually a ski trail (at least it is maintained - saw cuts all along) called Lost Pond Trail - at least one of the WODC newsletters from 1994 called it that. It used to be a railroad...

Unsuccesful attempt at Carrigain pond and the Captain

Crowds on the Captain Keith, Sorry you didn't get to finish your trip. I noticed that your truck was gone on Friday afternnon and I thought that was strange given that you had planned for 4 days. It was great to meet you and chat. I saw your Spot Device and I'm glad you commented on it. I'm...

    Overnight at Flat Mountain Pond...

I love your pictures. The falls along Bennett St Trail are numerous...I envy the people who own the tree farm on the othe side of the river:) I think that hike is one of the prettiest and most serene in the White Mountains, thanks for the trip back.

    Oakham State Forest 5-17-10

Hiked the Midstate Trail and the abandoned roads from Spencer Rd. down to the South end of Browning Pond. The trail was in nice shape with no significant blowdowns. Mostly very dry trail too...only getting some mud down closer to the pond. The bugs (black flies and mosquitos) were fierce. I...

    Most comfortable sleeping pads

I can take just about anything while out camping, but I'm a side sleeper and I just have not been comfortable for too many nights out. I use an EMS inflatable which packs small and is very light (cheaper than the BA too). The trouble seems to be that if I fully inflate then the arms and...

Sandwich Dome and Flat Pond 5-6 and 5-7-10

Bennet Street Trail to the Gleason Trail and back on to Bennet Street to Flat Pond Trail then around the Pond and up to Lost Pass. Returned via Flat Pond (with a bushwhack to eliminate the big loop around the river) then back all the way on Bennett Street Trail. The summit of Sandwich Dome had...

    Camelbak in-line water filters

I use the Pro Hiker which connects directly inline to my water bladder. I have a shut off valve between the connector and the bladder that prevents water from squirting out when it is full...a full pack and a pumped up bladder produces some pressure. If you don't have the shutoff you can just...
